A fresh and original twist on the common issue of bullying. Kids will relate, while parents and teachers will appreciate the story's deft handling of conflict resolution (which happens without adult intervention). Mean Jean was Recess Queen and nobody said any different. Nobody swung until Mean Jean swung. Nobody kicked until Mean Jean kicked. Nobody bounced until Mean Jean bounced. If kids ever crossed her, she'd push 'em and smoosh 'em lollapaloosh 'em, hammer 'em, slammer 'em kitz and kajammer 'em. Until a new kid came to school! With her irrepressible spirit, the new girl dethrones the reigning recess bully by becoming her friend in this infectious playground romp. Review: I love this book! Many of the “Mean Jeans” are better befriended, instead of avoided. - This is the best book for children, to teach them how to relate to one another. Kindness, and patience are important but accepting people for how they are and looking past some behavior to see the person is primary to making friends. Review: Students learn to Kill Them With Kindness!!! - The Recess Queen is an adorable story about how mean Jean rules the playground by bullying kids. She must do everything first and the other kids obey and try to stay out of her way. The authors tells about the Queen in fun rhyming poetic form, "she'd push em and smoosh em, lollapaloosh em." Luckily the bullying situation is resolved because of one strong-willed , kind youngster named Katie Sue. When Katie Sue invites Mean Jean to jump rope with her, she is at first shocked but in the end the two are playing together happily and sharing the jump rope. This book shows that killing them with kindness is a great strategy to teach kids when dealing with the "mean." Also this book shows that sometimes people can change too when you give them a chance! Bullies can become a friend. The illustrations are vibrant and fun. Students will love all the rhyming and teachers can use the rhymes in the story as a quick review of rhyming. Your students will learn a strategy to deal with a bully as well as have fun reading this book. I am sure they will go, "Bouncity, kickity, swingity..." once they enjoy this book.

Great for speaking about bullying in classroom setting
I am a school social worker and read this book to students in elementary school. It was a great way to introduce bullying/conflict resolution in a way students can relate and understand. The students have been asking me when I will be back to read to them again!

Pay Attention
In this novel an individual is hurting others. Fear is a factor. Fun was put on hold. A new kid changes things and life gets better. This is a light story about bullying aimed at primary children. It is colourful and easy to read. Good reading.

Sparks conversation
I had looked for a book that would spell out the lesson to learn in a more straight forward way. But this seems to work as my 5-year-old really enjoys the story and it sparks a conversation about why the lead character is so mean to other kids. Easy to read out loud and fun colorful illustration.
