If i can change the code why can't anyone else?

It has to be unlocked/on the correct code to switch to the mode to change the code. Summary of how to change code: 1. Enter correct/old code (starts at 000) 2. Move switch to other position 3. Enter new code you want 4. Move switch back to normal position

What is that extra piece on the bottom of the lock? Seems to be in the way, but it must have a purpose.

Hey, folks... THE EXTRA PIECE IS THE ACTUAL THING THAT PREVENTS THE TSA AGENT FROM REMOVING THE KEY UNLESS IT'S LOCKED BACK! WOW REALLY?!!!

Couldn't someone just reset the lock to factory settings, create their own combo, and open it?

Once the combination has been changed , the "factory combo" no longer works. I set one up with a combo that I could not remember and could not get it to open even using the original numbers.Even the manufacturer did not or would not supply a "master code". Locks are very nice and work well.

What is the overall length with the cable locked in place?

With cable locked,: 3.25 inches from top of cable loop to bottom of lock. 1.62 inches from top of cable loop to top of lock. Cable is one-eighth inch in diameter. It works well!
