OREI Type M Plug Adapter – Grounded 2-in-1 Adapter for South Africa

One general problem I've had with adapter sets that have multiple plugs for countries around the world is that they often are bulky when plugging into an outlet and have had several not make it through a trip. This time I opted to get just a plug adapter for the specific country I was going that was good and solid. One great feature of this plug is having dual ports/outlets to plug into. It is very well designed with one outlet being on the back and another on the top which made it easy to us both at the same time (e.g. was able to run my laptop computer while also charging my camera/phone batteries at the same time). The adapter is compact and easy carrying for travel. Worked perfectly, never overheated, and power was consistent.

I purchased this for my mom, who went on a trip to South Africa. She used it with no issues to charge a phone and a netbook. Important: the wall voltage in South Africa (220-240V) is often different from that of the US (120V). This plug simply allows you to fit a US-shaped plug into a South Africa-style outlet. It does nothing to change the voltage supplied. However: most electronic devices WILL still accept 220-240V. Her electronics, for example, accepted 120-240V, and thus she was able to use this without a portable transformer (which can change one wall voltage into another). In order to find out if you'll need a transformer, look at the wall chargers for the devices you want to use. On them, there should be a label which says the Input voltage (denoted by "V") and current (Amperes, denoted with an "A", will often be in milliAmps, "mA"). My phone charger, for example, says "INPUT: 100-240V ~200mA 50-60Hz 11-17VA", which means it can use voltages from 100-240V, and thus wouldn't need a transformer in order to function in South Africa, since their current and frequency are the same. Beware: I have several "most commonly used" adapter sets, and none had the South African adapter. This worked perfectly, is heavy weight and solid. Note that many newer electronincs (smart phones, e-readers, etc.) run on both 110-240 volt current and don't require a converter. But many appliances & electronics still need the converter to "step down" the electical voltage, and the converter is used with this adapter. Fortunately this adapter has a second plug outlet, so we could plug the converter into one space and plug a smart phone that doesn't need the converter directly into the adapter. No problems; works in connecting US devices to South African power systems; is effective in that it incorporates TWO input connections. (Was used recently for several weeks in various South African areas.) ((Notice to potential users: This device DOES NOT convert the 240 volt current common in S. Africa to any other current level -- to do that, you'll need a voltage adapter / transformer, which is an altogether different device.))

I bought two of these for my week long trip to South Africa. Like other users said if your device accepts 100-240vac 50/60Hz then all you have to do is plug it in directly to this adapter. No voltage converter necessary. These are nice and solid, heavy to the touch. Worked well for a week, can't imagine they won't last longer than that. Tip: If you're staying at a hotel they may already have one or two outlets with a build in converter for European/North American plugs. Mine had one outlet but it was nice to have more flexibility.

This is a plug adapter, not a voltage converter. It was employed on a trip to South Africa in conjunction with a step down voltage converter, and it allowed us to use our own electrical devices very simply. In fact — we bought two and loaned our spare to another traveler who found it equally convenient.

I bought 3 of this item since the photo looked like exactly what I needed, the price was great, and the reviews were very positive. Unfortunately, this is one of the very first items (after many years of ordering on Amazon) that was not at all what was advertised. The plug has 3 prongs in the formation of what should fit for South Africa but they are in miniature and will never work. The paper label on the product wrapped in plastic is correct and says it's an adapter for South Africa but I can tell you this won't fit in any outlets in South Africa. I was very disappointed as I ordered from overseas and it's too difficult to return for a refund. Buyers beware!

These were a little bit more expensive than the Ceptics Grounded Universal Plug Adapter for South Africa (Type M) that come in a three pack, but worth it to buy a few extras. I have only Type M sockets in my house (in Nepal) but no electronic devices sold in this country (let alone the ones I brought with me from the US) even power strips, use that type of plug, so I needed plug adapters for every socket in my house. Local plug adapters are very poorly made, they are bulky, don't fit well in the socket, and the plugs fit very loosely (some of them even sparked and smoked when I plugged something in!!) The OREI Grounded Universal 2 in 1 Plug Adapter Type M is an excellent product, very well made and sturdy and doesn't stick out too far from my wall. Plugs (of varying shape and types) fit securely into it, and the extra plug on top is a nice bonus - especially for the sockets behind furniture, where there isn't enough space for the adapter AND the plug to stick straight out from the wall. I bought several packs of the Ceptics adapters for use around the house, and a handful of these OREI ones for strategic use in places where I need two plugs (but don't have room for a power strip) or in tighter spaces.

Passt super in die Stecker. Kein Wackelkontakt wie bei anderen Produkten. Leicht, klein und robust. Sehr vielseitig dadurch, dass man zwei Geräte gleichzeitig einstecken kann.

The product works well and comes as advertised. Since there are only about five countries that use this type of plug adapter, I was thankful to be able to find/puchase the product on Amazon.ca, prior to my trip to South Africa last year (December 2014).
