Sherpa on Wheels Indoor Pet Dog Carrier, Black Large for All Breed Sizes

Bought for our dog. Her first flight. We practiced about 6 times before the flight to get her used to it. She is 14 lbs. It was easy to pull/roll the carrier behind me as I walked through the airport. Very smooth rolling. When I had to take the escalator, was able to pick up and carry the carrier. It fit nicely under the seat of the plane (Alaska). We can see each other through the mesh, so she knows I’m there. Both front and back ends have zippers which allowed me to easily give her treats or put things into the carrier while she’s in there. Top opening (unzipped) allowed her to sit upright with her head out to take in the sight. Pocket on top useful for storing treats. There’s really no con as it was so easy to use and sturdy. Really made flying with her easy! GREAT PRODUCT! In case Sherpa is reading this for product enhancements - Nice to have: the wheels don’t have a stopper. It would be nice to have a stopper so it won’t roll on its own such as on a moving tram. It would be nice if we can extend the carrier strap to use it as a handle so that we can stroll the carrier right next to us as we are walking, instead of it being behind us.

I bought this to fly with my 22-pound Westie. She is “tall” for her breed and I was concerned about her comfort over a long flight—but she was great on a three-hour trip. There was plenty of room for her to move around and lay comfortably, though I am not sure she would have been happy in there on a flight that was too much longer. The carrier fits fairly well under seats: the flex frame allows you to smoosh it under the window or middle seat, but I think it would have been too wide to fit under the aisle seat. (The gate attendant gave me pointers and she was absolutely right.) Once under, the bag sticks out a bit more than I think is probably allowed but no one said anything to me about it. You will have absolutely zero leg room for yourself: just know this going in. The bag’s mesh sides are well ventilated and my dog was perfectly fine—but you will not be able to see your dog, nor will she be able to see you during the flight. Carrying the bag is also easy. Getting on and off, you will have to carry your dog upright and the bag works really well for that. I used the tow strap in the terminal: at 22 pounds, she is too heavy to carry as a shoulder bag. She was fine with it—but no sudden direction changes or the bag will tip over. This is a really well made bag and a great option if you know the dimensions of your seat, and I am very happy with my choice.

This version of the Large Sherpa on Wheels is really impressive. It is sturdier and has far better wheels and material than the previous generation. The bottom is constructed of a one-piece plastic tray that protects the bottom edges and can hold in any fluids that might leak out during travel. One of my cats who is terrified of flying escaped mid-flight from the previous generation Sherpa by clawing the bottom of the zipper open. He ran to the front of the plane and I had to grab him and stuff him back in the bag (where the other cat stayed dutifully), holding him in while simultaneously fixing the zipper. The zippers on this Sherpa start higher up, away from where an animal is most likely to dig. This means the doors don't open as wide but this is a design feature, not a flaw. The large top opening is the preferred way of ingress and​ egress. The height and width of this bag is perfect to fit under seats on all common airliners. This bag rolls more freely than the old Sherpa, making it better to pull through the airport, but you have to hold it in position under the seat with your feet during takeoff. If I worked at Sherpa I would be very proud of all the design improvements they made in just one generation. The old Sherpa was a good product, but this one is fantastic and much tougher. In my pictures below, the new Sherpa is the one with the green flag. I would recommend it for one or two cats or one dog up to 22 lbs. How to get two cats in the Sherpa: Put the Sherpa in a small room like a bathroom. With the top open, get one cat in each hand and close the door to the bathroom. Start with the cat that is more submissive and move him to the side. Speak firmly and use a firm grip to let the cats know you mean business. Lower the second cat in next to the first, rear feet first. If they don't cooperate at first just keep trying. Eventually they get the picture and will stop fighting you.

I travel yearly with my 17lb Brussels Griffon from Seattle to Cabo via Alaska Airlines (coach). This year Oct 2024, I bought this Sherpa rolling crate to try out. It rolled smoothly through the airport and I definitely appreciated that both the side flaps can be rolled up for good air flow while my dog was stowed under the seat in front of me. Previously I used the Kurgo G Train backpack for dogs which also fits well under Alaska's cheap seats, but it did become a bit uncomfortable lugging him around the airport on my back like that. The Kurgo also doesn't have nearly as much air flow as this Sherpa crate. Because my dog is a flat faced, brachycephalic breed, good airflow is vital. When I bought this Sherpa, I wasn't totally confident that Alaska wouldn't give me a hard time since it is slightly larger than their listed max measurements, but I'm happy to report that there were no issues at all and it definitely fits under their window and middle coach or premium seats. TIP* If flying Alaska, note that the leg space under the aisle seats are always more narrow than the middle or window seat. This is because their aisle seats are where they store the entertainment/electronic box for all the adjoining seats. I don't believe that this Sherpa crate would fit under an AISLE seat in coach or premium (first class would fit fine) so be sure you choose any seat other than an aisle if not flying first class. The width and lenght of this crate really can't be adjusted or "smooshed" since the wheels are not removable so it's really the height that can be manipulated. I'll also note that soft crates typically aren't an issue with Alaska since they can be somewhat manipulated or "smooshed" to fit underneath the seat (so long as the pet can turn around) but to be safe, I used my Kurgo backpack as my carry on and figured if there was an issue with the Sherpa at check-in, I could just transfer my dog into my Kurgo backpack at the gate and use the Sherpa rolling crate as my carry on. But like I mentioned, the Sherpa fit without any issue. The length of the crate does hang out slightly when under the seat but this isn't a problem. As I list out my Pros and Cons below, please keep in mind that my dog is very, VERY chill while flying. He is not an escape artist, he's not a stressed out flyer and he doesn't struggle with environmental anxiety. I pulled him around the airport in this crate without the top being zipped and also left just enough of it unzipped while in flight to let him stick his head out (see pics). For the record, the airline does state that pet crates are to remain securely closed at all times while inside the cabin. Also for the record, I don't follow this rule. I always allow my dog to pop his head out once we are at cruising elevation, closing him back in once we begin our descent. I do this so I can easily keep an eye on him because of his flat face. His particular temperament while flying and training allows me to do this, knowing he will "stay" inside his crate on command unless I give him the "okay" to come out. Pro's: Fits under Alaska Airlines seats, rolls smoothly, seems comfortable and has plenty of airflow for my brachycephalic Brussels Griffon and all zippers seem sturdy. Cons: There's no short tether to secure to your pets harness or collar while inside this crate. There's also no way to lock the zippers to help avoid a savvy or stressed out pet pushing his way through a zipper opening. Neutral: To enhance airflow, there is alot of stiff mesh. My dog is not a crate fighter so I can't say how well or how long this mesh would hold up with a pooch trying to claw or chew his way out. (For my dog, I appreciate all the mesh) The cons I listed above were not issue for me or my dog personally. I am perfectly happy with this crate, it saves me from having to carry my dog on my back and it fit my doggo's needs for our airline travels.

Worked very well to transport a puppy cross country on United. Fit well under the seat, but getting it and out was a little tricky due to the small space between rows in steerage, or economy as they still call it, I was able to board with the first group so I had a couple extra minutes and we deplaned last, and being in an aisle seat really helped. The wheels were a godsend getting through the airports. I almost bought a carrier without them and I am SO glad I didn't. IAD/Dulles is so poorly laid out that no matter what, you end up walking very long distances and typically some (most) of the moving sidewalks are not working. Without the wheels I'm not sure how we would have managed. The puppy was mostly happy throughout the journey, sleeping comfortably and I was happy knowing he was safe. The carrier was sturdy but not too rigid and easy to get the puppy in & out. I would absolutely recommend this carrier. PS-- never did figure out how the flag was supposed to attach.

Bought this two years ago to take our 13 lb Yorkie on the plane. We've used it a maybe 6 times. It's big enough for him but with not a lot of room left over. It rolls well enough and has nice padding inside. The top opens (nice for him to stick his head out) and both ends open as well. Overall, it's worked very well. Here's the problem though. I haven't used it for maybe 10 months. I just took it out of the closet and the zipper on the top portion doesn't want to work. The metal has turned rough to the touch. Not sure what kind of metal it is but it's definitely cheap, cheap, cheap. I put Vaseline on the plastic zipper teeth in the hopes that it will be easier to pull the zipper along it. Please note that the metal zippers on both ends don't have the same problem. Apparently, two different types of metal were used. I was hoping to be able to use this for years to come but I'm not sure that will be the case. I hate to discourage anyone from buying it as, aside from this problem, it's a nice carrier.

I bought the Sherpa on Wheels and loved the way it made getting through the airport so easy. Unfortunately, it lasted only one trip. The zipper teeth stitching on both the top entrance and the pocket unraveled making the carrier unusable. It is such a well designed product but its a shame that such poor quality zippers were used considering the price. My fifteen pound Boston Terrier was comfortable in it but did not have much room to move. The size exceeds the regulations of airlines but it bends down on the top and I was able to get it on all my flights. It is such a great idea and I would be willing to pay more if it weren't so cheaply assembled.

A true lifesaver. I had a medium Sherpa for my cat to fly in Southwest (it fit under every seat) but as my cat grew he got to be too heavy to lug around the airport. He's a twenty pound gigantic tom cat - a little overweight, but his frame is just huge. It hurt my shoulder to carry him, it was a pain constantly lifting and scooting through slow security lines, and I'm sure he didn't like the jostling of bumping into my legs while we walked anymore than I did. I tried a few backpack carriers before giving this one a try. He fits wonderfully, even better than in the medium Sherpa (minus the head room). It handled great at the airport and was easy to use in the car too. But, a few slight cons. 1) It doesn't fit sideways under the Southwest seats like the old one did. Luckily no flight attendants cared, it didn't stick out too too far going in lengthwise. 2) The zipper don't open as far, which is great for keeping cats in, but makes it hard to GET them in or to force them out if they don't want to. I literally scooped my cat up upside down to put him in it for his flight. And at security, I literally had to pour him out of it. And, when I first got it and he was excited to nap in it, the opening made it hard for him to get into by himself (especially if it wasn't next to a wall, which was hilarious for me to watch). Overall, is the best option I've found so far. The old Sherpa lasted five years, 8 flights, and dozens of vet visits and is still in great shape. I hope I can say the same of this one.

Excellent, the best carrier so far. We just brought our two dogs to Costa Rica for 6 months. They manoeuvre well in the airport, the 5&10 lb dogs are very comfortable, the wheels are excellent. It’s a bit long for under the plane seat but we put them In end first and it was ok. I wish this was made in a medium size on wheels, I would definitely recommend this!

ne correspond pas à la taille L. Ma petite chienne ne pouvait pas entrer dans le sac. J'ai dû modifier une partie d'une ouverture pour lui permettre d'y accéder. Elle commence à l'utiliser quand elle ne veut pas jouer avec l'épagneul français, plus grand qu'elle et très joueur. A force d'efforts et de récompenses, Lexy , ma patite chienne, a fini par adopter ce sac bloqué par une petite table afin qu'il ne bouge pas. J'espère qu'au prochain voyage elle accepterait de s'y installer. Ce sac est robuste. J'aurai aimé avoir le même en grand pour mon Épagneul français. Merci au fabricant de prévoir une entrée plus aisée pour les chiens.
