Could this be used as a nightlight or is it to bright?

I got it for my girlfriend’s son to play with, so my opinion might be moot. Brightness would be subjective but I think it could work as a nightlight - but it is pretty bright. The thing that I see being a problem is I’m not sure how quickly it goes through batteries and can’t remember if there’s a plug for an external power source.

I cant seem to get mine to switch to the pulse mode. Ive tried clicking the button again while its on but that just turns it off. Any help?
