Rio Lobo

My DVD arrived as promised in good condition and on time.

Rio Lobo is a Classic John Wayne film set during the last days of the Civil War and beyond. A group of Confederate Soldiers hyjack a Union Gold Train that the Duke's group of Union Soldiers are guarding. The Duke knows this is an inside job, with information being provided by a Union Traitor. After capturing some of the Confederate Soldiers involved, he learns a small amount of information about the Traitor and upon helping the Soldiers after they are being released from a Union prision, they agree to keep in touch with the Duke after the war, and to notify him if they should happen to come across the Traitor again (they never knew his name only what he looked like). Chris Mitchum's character moves back to his home town or Rio Lobo, Texas and low and behold the Traitor turns up there trying to force everyone off their land and taking it over for his self. Mitchum gets word to the Duke and the fun begins. This movie has a great cast, including Chris Mitchum (Robert Michum's son), Victor French (Little House on the Parrie), and Jack Elam as Chris's crusty old father. It's the Duke at his best and it is well worth the watch. I highly recommend it.

Great and funny movie

Almost missed this one, which although directed by Howard Hawks incorporates elements/approaches of director John Ford (perhaps because the presence of John Wayne). Don’t miss it. It’s more mesmerizing than good or bad, as it incorporates both the complexity of reconciliation after the Civil War and an assessment of the role of women in defending themselves and their communities. If that reads as though the movie plods, it does not. It moves right along, accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith’s score. One thing the film has in common with all Hawks’ films is the frankness with which the interaction between men and women is treated. From “Only Angels Have Wings” and “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” to “El Dorado”, the candor reveals a director who knew women (and men).

Great Movie

I ❤️ the duke

One of the all time great Duke movies. This is my personal favorite of the Howard Hawks sheriff trilogy with John wayne. Wayne stars as an officer in the northern army who is tasked with tracking down a traitor who sold information to the south during the war. Wayne teams up with a few southern officers to track the man down. A movie with great humor and action it garnered a "G" rating so it is a great introduction to the genre. I watched it with my dad when I was a kid and now my kids watch it with me.

I loved every minute of the movie, if you're a John Wayne fan I highly recommend this movie.

『リオ・ロボ』(Rio Lobo)('70) 出演∶ジョン・ウェイン、ホルへ・リヴェロ、ジェニファー・オニール、ジャック・イーラム、ヴィクター・フレンチ、スサーナ・ドサマンテス、クリス・ミッチャム、マイク・ヘンリー、デイヴィッド・ハドルストン、シェリー・ランシング 監督∶ハワード・ホークス この映画で一番に感じたこと。それは"老境"に差し掛かったジョン・ウェイン御大もなかなかいい味を出してるということ(笑) 野宿の場面で､寒さに耐えかねた若い娘が､若い男でなく､"安心して眠れる"ウェインの寝床に潜り込んでいたという場面には笑いました｡ 名匠ハワード・ホークス監督と"ミスター西部劇"ジョン・ウェインのコンビには､'40〜'70年代まで各年代に西部劇の代表作がある｡『赤い河』('48),『リオ・ブラボー』('58),『エル・ドラド』('66)そして､ホークスの遺作『リオ・ロボ』('70)だ。(西部劇以外に､アフリカが舞台の『ハタリ！』('62)というのもある) ストーリー的には『リオ・ロボ』が一番大掛かりかもしれない。南北戦争末期､北軍の軍用金の護送列車を指揮するマクナリー大佐(ウェイン)と､軍用金奪取を図る南軍ゲリラ部隊のコルドナ大尉(リベロ)や部下のタスカロラ(ミッチャム)たちとの戦闘大アクションと､それに続く森林地帯でのゲリラ戦が冒頭の見せ場だが､一連の活劇だけでも(膨らませれば)､Ｂ級西部劇１本作れそうな見ごたえだ｡ すぐに終戦となり､コルドナとタスカロラは捕虜収容所に入るのだが､映画の本題は収容所を釈放される二人を､マクナリーが迎えにいってからだ。マクナリーは､軍資金輸送の極秘情報を南軍に売って､戦闘による部下の犠牲の元凶になった裏切り者への復讐を誓っており､裏切り者炙り出しに､コルドナらも協力を約束する。きのうの敵は今日の友――というわけだ｡ 故郷リオ・ロボに帰って牧場を営むタスカロラを苦境に追い込むワル実業家ケッチャム(フレンチ)と悪徳保安官ヘンドリックス(ヘンリー)が現れる。そのケッチャムこそが､例の裏切り者と知ったマクナリーとコルドナは､リオ・ロボに駆けつける。そんな彼らに､ヘンドリックス一派に恩人を殺され､自分も狙われる若い娘シャスタ(オニール)も加わり､さらにケッチャムに監禁されていたタスカロラの祖父フィリップス(イーラム)も助け出されて仲間入りし､戦いの火蓋は切って落とされる――― ホークス-ウェイン・コンビの『リオ・ブラボー』『エル・ドラド』『リオ・ロボ』は､内容的には繋がりはないが､ストーリー構成が同工異曲で(脚本家も同じ女流SF作家のリー・ブラケット)､よく"３部作"と言われる。主人公と仲間のハンパ者集団が､屈強な手下のガンマンを揃えた極悪人たちに立ち向かって苦闘の末､勝利する勧善懲悪西部劇の典型パターンだ｡ 前２作では､主人公の味方といえば､手が震えるアル中ガンマン・口だけは達者な老人・経験不足の青二才ガンマンなどであった。この『リオ・ロボ』では､ジョン・ウェインが年取ったからというわけでもないだろうが(いや､やっぱりそうか?)､元·南軍ゲリラ戦士二人(コルドナ,タスカロラ)と､すぐにショットガンを乱射したがるアブナイ暴走老人がおり､前２作より"強力布陣(?)"になっている｡ とくに､暴走老人フィリップス役のジャック・イーラムは秀逸なキャラだ。『エル・ドラド』で､バラ弾がどこに飛ぶかわからないので味方にも警戒される短銃身ショットガンをぶっ放したジェームズ・カーンの30年後の姿のようだ(笑) フィリップス老人を演じるジャック・イーラムは､1950年代から悪役俳優として活躍し､1973年のサム・ペキンパー監督『ビリー・ザ・キッド／21才の生涯』では､西部劇黄金期の脇役俳優が何人も居並ぶ中で､一番目立っていたような……。その反面､他の脇役キャラは､前２作と比べると弱いかなぁ｡『リオ・ブラボー』のディーン・マーティンや『エル・ドラド』のロバート・ミッチャムと比べるのは気の毒だが……。息子のクリス・ミッチャムも､見た目はカッコいいんですけどね……｡ [余談] じつは､このレビュー､４〜５年前の投稿に加筆・訂正した再投稿です。前回投稿のあと､他の古いウェイン西部劇を多々見てきて､西部劇黄金時代の有名作品と比べても遜色のない作品だと考えを改めて､☆１個プラスして☆５個になってます｡
