New York Times bestselling author Malachy McCourt offers an authoritative and engrossing one-volume chronicle of Ireland from pre-Christian times to the present, told with Irish flair by the gifted storyteller. The pages are populated with figures from myth, history, and the present-from Saint Patrick to Oliver Cromwell, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and Charles Parnell to Sinead O'Connor and Bono. Some beloved, some controversial-each influenced the course of Irish and world history. While McCourt vividly describes Ireland's turbulent history, he also offers a cultural survey with fresh insights to the folklore, literature, art, music, and cuisine of Ireland, producing an irresistible tour through the Emerald Isle. Review: Great history of Ireland - Excellent history of Ireland by a well known Irish author. Review: A Truly Enjoyable Read ! - Mr. McCourts Journey through Ireland's past leaves me wanting more. The information and legacies imparted in such a way that informs as well as delights the reader. I've been a fan of the McCourt Bros for years and this book by Malachy surpassed my expectations I had held off reading it for some time ,I have been drawn to books addressing the more volatile topics of passionate Irish Republicanism , The cover alone , the image enchanted me the contents engaged me. I will read it again !

Good reference
Good summary of Irish families It helped verify some info about my great grandfather and his 7 brothers who were banished from Ireland about 1860. Each sent to a different country. Bob McMahon

Must Run in the Family
At first I was dismissive of Malachy McCourt's "History" of Ireland, assuming he was writing just to take advantage of his brother's fame (Frank McCourt, Angela's Ashes), but once I started reading the "History," I realized Malachy has his own style which is equally engaging, and that, in his own way, he knows his country's history. I do keep checking his facts against other, less entertaining texts, just to be sure I'm not falling for any blarney, though! It's a fun approach to a complex subject and perfect for younger students of Irish history. I wish I had chosen it as required reading in my Irish Studies course this spring; I will certainly keep it in mind for subsequent classes!

Really great book. Really a collection of short biographies organized into time periods with introductory information for each period. The magic though is that Malachy McCourt takes these people and bios and tells a real story with each one. It is less biography and more vignette a real sense of the person comes across. At the end of the book a real sense of the Irish comes through and furthering the storytelling lyric nature of the people is McCourt's own storytelling. Really just like sitting on a barstool hearing a tale. Just lovely. Besides that though there is actual dissemination of Irish history just done in an unconventional fashion

Very interesting and thorough history of Ireland
Usually history books are rather dull, but this one was most interesting. There were humorous parts and very serious parts. Very readable and enjoyable. Really prepared me for my trip to Ireland.

Malachy McCourt's History of Ireland
It's like being there and listening to this marvelous storyteller when you read this book. Interesting way of presenting history. He tells the story from his heart. Makes you Irish at heart even when you're not Irish. I loaned my first copy and never had it returned, so this one will re-complete my library.

Malachy McCourts History of Ireland
I have just started reading and it is very informative. The book was in excellent condition for being used. I wish I had known some of this info on Ireland before I visited a couple of years ago. There were some places mentioned in the book I would have liked to visit. Some of them were right in the area I was visiting but I was unaware of their significance.
