Can a 5 year old use this without getting frustrated?

No. This blaster is designed for teenagers and young adults. It shoots in the range of 90 fps, so the prime strength required (to compress the much stronger internal spring) is much higher than for a Nerf elite (dart firing) gun. I would not let a 5-year old use this.

It shoots Nerf foam balls, Nerf darts are smaller and will barely be thrown out of this Gun. Most likelly they will simply fall out of the barrel.
