I didn't see calibration mentioned in the instructions and there's no calibrate button, is the humidity sensor fairly accurate?

Cannot be calibrated. I bought this and 2 cheaper adjustable AcuRite units. In addition, I have an older ThermoPro indoor/outdoor and two Honeywell smart thermostats that are supposed to be able to control a Honeywell dehumidifier. Six readings ranging from 38% on the indoor/outdoor for it's indoor reading; THIS ThermoPro and one of the AcuRites at 43%, the other AcuRite at 42%, and the Honeywell thermostats at 44% and 45% (although they're on different floors--the 44% was nearer my three new units). So, six opinions from 38% to 44% (ignoring the Honeywell on the other floor), with two at 43%.

Does the backlight stay on constantly or does it shut off and u can turn it on if you need?

When you press the lightbulb icon it activates the backlight and will automatically shut off in around 15 seconds giving a time to view the display, or if you press the lightbulb icon again before the 15 seconds it will shut off when you press it. There is no way to keep the backlight on or extend it beyond 15 seconds except to press the backlight icon after it shuts off, and cannot press it again to extend time before that or it will turn off.

How long do the batteries last under normal usage?

I purchased this on January 26th, 2019 so Ive had it a year and 2 months and the battery gauge reads on the lower end but it still works!

Will sitting this on a window ledge above the kitchen sink result in inaccurate readings?

Sitting on a window ledge above the kitchen sink will not give you accurate readings for the ROOM. The window will affect temperature readings and if you are running hot water in the sink, the humidity readings will probably go up.
