I was unsure what I was getting...but it just sounded worth trying...and it definitely was!
First of all, this sucker uses battery power...but you should never have to replace anything because it is rechargeable. There is a button on the side that allows you to use the lighter as a flashlight...it appears to be a single LED with a lens to tighten its beam a bit. You can see things that are 20-30 feet away with the light it can put out. It has two intensities of light and a flasher mode to choose from also. Just hit the button until it is doing what you want. Now...the lighter! The business end of the lighter is opposite the LED flashlight. It is secured with a latch that has a safety release. You must press the safety to open the latch. This is very good as far as safety is concerned. Once opened you will see four posts sticking up...think of each of the four posts as spark plugs. What happens when you press the lighter button on the top is this: the battery power is stepped up to a much higher voltage, and this voltage is switched between each set of two pairs of the posts. What you see as a purple "X" are two arcs that go diagonally between each diagonal pair of posts -- this happens so fast that it appears to be an X shape to the human eye. Is it an arc or a plasma? A really good question. Plasma would tend to require quite a lot more power and also generally consumes....something non-replaceable in the process... The bridge-wire detonators that are used to initiate ignition in electrically initiated firearms, some tank rounds, and even some artillery systems turn one wire -- usually more separate wires for redundancy -- into plasma....the voltage consumes the wires contained in in the case and cause heat very quickly in the process...faster that percussion primers when done correctly... As fascinating as that is...the arcing in this lighter will light anything you can get in there and near there. I have lit diesel fuses to start large bonfires with no trouble at all, and diesel has a tendency to cause matches to simply go out when they are tossed into it. I had no such issues. I was able to easily light some printer paper to kick off my charcoal chimney, which is what I use to get charcoal quickly up to temperature without using lighter fluid. You put some paper in the bottom of it or under the base of the charcoal chimney and just get it lit...the rest takes care of itself. Then you put the coals in your grill and get after it. You can use the same method to get various types of wood burning in order to make a nice smokey flavor to your next grill session. It starts up small kindling for campfires, no problem. If you have dry leaves or pine needles, so much the better! It works...well...it charges pretty fast, but it seems to last quite a while between charges. I could take it camping and not need to charge it for a week easily. But I'd also bring a battery USB brick just in case...besides...you have to have something for communications, so I charge my 6M/2M/70cm amateur radio using USB also....a brick keeps it going and you can solar charge all three if all else fails. Do you need one? Well, it depends -- if you are skilled in starting fires with a match and this is what you like...maybe it's not for you. (It doesn't stop you from bringing matches too though...). If you pride yourself in starting fires with no matches at all...again...having this doesn't stop you, but it is a good backup! I can usually get it done with a single match...I can also twirl a stick and get there.., But I'll keep this thing handy. It is definitely water-resistant...probably not water-proof. Who knows though...if you give it a good drying after submerging it...there is a better than average chance it could work again for you! If you made it this far...I hope this was helpful.

Will not charge UPDATE... All is good and great customer service
It worked great for 3 days until the battery ran out. When I used the supplied USB cable it did not charge nor did I get the red LED charging indicator. I tried another USB cable and another charger, both known to be good and charging other batteries. Still no LED indicator nor any charge at all. Once I returned home I was 2 days past the 30 day return policy. UPDATE I do not know what my granddaughter did but it is charging perfectly now every time I plug it in. But what is really great in that the seller reached out to me due to my one star review. The seller addressed my issues and offered to let me return the product or send me a new one. This happened well after the eligible return date. Great product and product support! UPDATE 8/18/2023 Even though the charge port on the lighter is a USB-C, it will not charge if you use USB-C to USB-C such as the higher wattage fast charge. You must use USB-C (lighter) to USB-A (wall charger). I bought this 5 months ago and I couldn't be happier with it. I am a smoker and I go through one pack a day. This lighter will last 4 to 6 days depending on how often I use the handy flashlight. Thank you for such a nice priced great product and the awesome support!!

Dog Whistle Loud.
As a lighter it's not bad. That said, my main reason for 4 star review is that this thing emits a high pitched, loud noise every time I light it. I dont like it but it isnt overly bothersome to me as a human but my service dog freaks out every time I light it. I think it hurts her ears or maybe it just drives her nuts but either way I just wanted a lighter, not a dog whistle. If you do want a dog whistle that is also a kinda cool lighter then this one is for you. As a service dog, Bella is supposed to stay with me & pay attention to me. She can't do her job properly when I light this lighter so I will be giving it away as a gift to a dogless(and catless, just in case)person. If you don't have a service dog, pet dog or cat(in case it bothers them too)then this will be fine. As far as functionality goes it works & is kinda neat. Who knows, maybe the dog whistle could come in handy if you encounter a wild animal but then again it could make them attack you haha.

A worthy purchase!
What a great tool. A lighter unaffected by wind, with a better reach than many, and the perfect thread burner for beading projects

Very pleased with this lighter
Note: Smoking is bad for you so don't follow in my bad habits. I have a Jeep Wrangler TJ and with the top down there's no way to keep a regular lighter lit when going over 40 mph. A plasma windproof lighter is the only way to go. I've had another plasma lighter for years, but forget it in the Jeep one day when a storm blew in and it didn't survive the rain. This lighter is great because I don't have to worry about the weather again. In the dark, my Jeep's dome light isn't very bright so the flashlight has been very handy. My dog just looked at me like I was crazy then ignored me when I used the whistle. I guess it's good if you get lost in the woods. I've also used this when camping. It's great to get the kindling started. But be careful about burning the hairs off the back of your hand when lighting a camp stove (A "hold my beer and watch this" move.)

Battery Life is Dismal
The description says “300” lights in one battery charge. WHO is counting this? This thing at best, will last you about 2 packs of cigarettes, this would be 40 lights, not 300. I’m not putting it down because it’s a well constructed product and it does work consistently. Because it is nice looking and it does work i did not return it. Instead, i purchased another one so i keep the 2nd one charged up while i use the this one. That’s not a terrible thing while you’re at home but if you’re traveling you’ll have to either A) carry a backup mainstream Bic lighter with you, or B) be beady to hook it up to a power bank to re-charge it. This isn’t even considering the use of the flashlight, in which case it would last you much less time. I have 2 of them and it’s the same story with both so it’s not a malfunction. This is probably better for your occasional use to light candles. I do recommend it though. Just don’t believe the claim of 300 lights on 1 charge.

This was my husband’s favorite gift
He works midnights & smokes cigarettes, and not only has he gotten a ton of uses from the lighter, he’s used the flashlight too. He loves gadgets & he had fun, & a shock out of this one. He found out that you can put yourself into cardiac arrest if you touch the “flame”. Lol I told him not to, but he’s a man & knows it all. Pretty sure it rebooted his entire system, bc when he touched it, he fell backwards then proceeded to walk around the house cussing under his breath. So don’t touch the pretty light, kids, or you’ll get tased. Lol

Does not last long on a charge
I really like this lighter but the ad is misleading. It says that on a 1.5 to 2 hour charge it will last for up to 300 uses but it actually only lasts for about 30 uses. With that in mind it works very well
