Is the 400/1000 stone hard and flat enough to sharpen chisels and plane blades? The last stone I had would flake off like sand and developed a groove

Yes I hone straight razors, all stones will develop imperfections, you also need to buy a flattening stone or a 12x12 piece of marble and a square of 400 grit wet sandpaper then flatten it that way

What are these stones made of? Description says silicon carbide, and then later it says white corundum. Which is it???

For this one, it is white corundum stone.

Where is this product made?

Hi speersc, this product is designed in the US, and manufactured in CN.

Does this slide around without wood block?

No more than a wood block does!
