The lid for my canister is stuck, it won't turn at all. Can someone please offer advice?

Previous advice should be good to get it open. I recommend looking at the male threads, on the canister body not the lid, when you have it open. The seam where the two halves of the canister are molded together can be pronounced and I found scrapping it down with a knife so that it doesn't interfere with the lid helped tremendously.

can the bears smell food through the can?

Yes, bears can smell through the canister. These are not air tight. Place this far away from where you are sleeping. I believe the manufacturer provides a recommended distance. Also bears can smell you. Dont worry black bears are not aggressive. The point of the can is to prevent bears from eating human food and developong an association between food and humans. They must have changed the design because mine has an opening of 7-1/2" with an overall outside diameter of 8-3/4" and a height of 12-7/16"
