Chinese Herbal Formulas and Applications

I wanted "comprehensive" in my TCM formulas book, and thanks to Chen & Chen's "Chinese Herbal Formulas and Applications", I got it. The best things about it: lists literal formula names, alternate names, original source with original prep instructions and modern ones, clinical manifestations typical for appropriate use and applications thereof, detailed explanation of the formula and all ingredients, a quick-glance chart for each formula, modifications, cautions/contraindications, pharmacological effects, clinical studies and research (example: "Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang" discusses clinical studies done on its effectiveness for 4 different types of gastritis/peptic ulcers/GERD/upper GI bleeding/morning sickness/infantile indigestion/gastroptosis/gastroenteritis/stomach pain/abdominal pain/IBS/ulcerative colitis/diarrhea/cholecystitis and cholelithiasis/hepatitis/renal failure/stress and depression), herb-drug interaction(!), toxicology, and comparisons of similar formulas. YAY!

John and Tina Chen are the best authorities are Chinese herbal medicine. This book is very easy to use. Quick resource.

I needed a book on herbs that takes it one step further than Bensky's book. I mean I love Bensky's book too, it's just that this one by Chens' is I think more clinically practical, gives more examples of clinical uses and research on the formulas, and is very readable. It's a huge volume too which means I'll never be able to read the whole thing!! I love it and know it will make a huge difference in my clinical skills.

Ok in excellent shape, timely arrival using weekly in classes

A wonderful book with very detailled Information about Chinese Formulas. Specially helpful for finding the right formula for a specific disorder are the tables in the appendices: Modern western disease names and TCM disgnoses are listed crosswise. For any condition one can find an advice. The only handicap: For beginners the book is discouraging because of its volume! 1622 pages of concentrated information!

This book helps me to study, often every day, and to deepen my knowledge of Chinese herbs and is very helpful to prescribe my prescription of herbs and formula's for my patients in my practice PINGHENG. For me it is also a book of reference. I am very glad of this book!

I still prefer using Bensky in my practice. This was a recommended purchase for our Doctorate of Acupuncture program.

What a great book. I have the Bensky Formulas and Strategies, and this is a good companion--there are charts that make everything super-clear. Great commentaries on the modern applications of the formulas.
