What is the horse power rating of this motor?

1hp = 746w; if this is an 18w motor then it equates to 0.024HP. The configuration of this motor is not three phase as the above comment claims. The capacitor is known as a “start capacitor” in this application and is very common in single-phase motors (which use a internal start winding in conjunction with capacitor for proper starting).

Question 2

Can I put a dimmer switch or something to adjust (slow) the speed?

It’s a bit of a guess, but I would say no. I think the speed of the motor is more a function of the 60 Hz (frequency) of the A/C, rather than the power that you might be able to adjust.

Question 3

How hot is normal for these motors. I ran mine for an hour this morning, without a load, and measured 182 degrees F with my infrared gun thermometer.

These things run really hot if run for periods as long as that. Personally, I switched to a Pololu 131:1 metal gear motor (1 RPS, but comes in many different speeds) item #1107 for $25, runs stone-cold all day even under load. takes 12V. added a hub, 6mm shaft with #4-40 lock screws (pair for about $8. The Chancs takes a 7mm hub, which is a rather unusual size. Go to www.pololu.com. May be able to get them here on Amazon. The Chancs may actually a 3-phase motor (I didn't take it apart) where two of the phases come from the 120 AC you feed it, and the capacitor induces a phase change to run the 3rd phase. Purely a mediocre approximation, and this may be why it runs so hot. Haven't played with 3-phase for 30 years, so my recall is rusty.

Question 4

Will this motor work to rotate a spit rod, with a basket drum for roasting coffee in a BBQ?
