A no-holds-barred account of folk legend Judy Collins's harrowing struggle with compulsive overeating and of the journey that led her to a solution. Since childhood Judy Collins has had a tumultuous, fraught relationship with food. Her issues with overeating nearly claimed her career and her life. For decades she thought she simply lacked self-discipline. She tried nearly every diet plan that exists, often turning to alcohol to dull the pain of yet another failed attempt to control her seemingly insatiable cravings. Today, Judy knows she suffers from an addiction to sugar and grains, flour and wheat. She adheres to a strict diet of unprocessed foods consumed in carefully measured portions. This solution has allowed her to maintain a healthy weight for years, to enjoy the glow of good health, and to attain peace of mind. Alternating between chapters on her life and those of the many diet gurus she has encountered along the way (Atkins, Jean Nidetch of Weight Watchers, Andrew Weil, to name a few), Cravings is the culmination of Judy's genuine desire to share what she's learnedโso that no one else has navigate her heart-rending path to recovery.

Tells it like it is
I just finished the audio of CRAVINGS and the entire book got to the core of what I personally had been in denial of in my own life.....my "secret" food addiction. Like Ms. Collins, I have tried every diet, exercised like crazy, read every diet book and psychology book related to food, I could have started my own library.Ms. Collins has always been open with her struggles with alcohol and depression, so to include how food was also an addiction (something we dont always recognize in ourselves or others), she takes the reader on her journey towards her path to healing.I have lost over 30 lbs. but I can relate to her struggles, the literal cravings, the eating "normally" around others but bingeing on junk when others arent there. I applaud her saying that she is not an authority on diet and nutrition, but shares the solution that finally worked for her. I also enjoyed her including the histories of the many diet gurus, going all the way back to Lord Byron.Weight, food, and self image go hand in hand. It isn't until one recognizes certain patterns that the truth is revealed. To those who struggle, you are not alone, find the help you need, and work with the emotional and nutritional tools you are given. It truly is a day at a time.Once again, Brava to Ms. Collins.

...he won the heart of a lady...
Thank you. The information is helpful and is revealed with art and subtlety. You are an excellent storyteller, who shows the parallels and intersections of all stories of all times, and all places. Mostly, thank you for sharing, literally opening a vein, giving a life saving transfusion, that shows joy and pain on the journey. I recommend this to all adults and adolescents who are struggling in silence, as well as, those who are you in pitched battles with their mind, body and spirit confluence. And Judy, May you stay forever young.

Brutal and Courageous in its Honesty
I hadnโt thought about Judy Collins in a long time, and somehow came across this book. I had read others of hers, but this one focuses on her addictions, both to alcohol and food. Clearly it has been a long journey for her, in terms of keeping her career going and at the same time both practicing and dealing with her cravings, and her description of her journey and the turning point in getting free is very moving and was very inspiring to me. I wish the book hadnโt ended so abruptly, because her descriptions of her life as an addict were very lengthy and detailed, and when she began to recover, the book sped up and ended rather abruptly. Nevertheless, I, personally, got a lot out of it and it has informed my own journey.

You too can beat compulsive eating
In her honest memoir, Ms. Collins makes us privy to her vulnerabilities and strugglesโsomething hard for the average person to do and almost unheard of for a noted and admired world talent and international celebrity. We who suffer from various addictions can find comfort and, most importantly, hope in this encouraging and unsparing self-evaluation, which shares effective tools for recovery. Many heartfelt thanks to the author.

The book is great. However
The book is great. However, it arrived with a torn and wrinkled jacket. I was intending to pass this book onand am very disappointed.

Interesting if you like Judy Collins
Interesting if you like Judy Collins. I was reading it to find out what she did to get her eating on track, but she didn't give the solution until the last chapter. I was expecting a "how to" book and it was a wandering memoir.

Powerful and inspiring
I have listened to Judy's music since the '70s. Her voice is like an angel, so clear and perfect. Having seen her in a concert when she was just 70, her voice was still there. Never in my wildest imagination would I have guessed or had a clue of her illnesses and addictions. It is so courageous of her to write this all-telling memoir in the hopes of helping someone else find their way. Truly inspirational and I applaud you Judy, not just for your music but for your winning the battle against your monsters. Peace to you always.

Not informative. Not helpful
This book was a waste of time for me. It didn't offer any concrete "plan" except for a few sentences at the end. It was more of a love letter to Judy Collins by Judy Collins

great insight on addiction and disordered eating
Although I found the book a bit bouncy in the first half (moving from her own story to talking about other historical figures she had known - and back to her own story), it was worth it to persevere and keep reading. It was very insightful.
