I already have a raspberry pi - should I get this or just get other accessories?

It depends on the sort of projects you want to build. The raspberry Pi is good for building specific stand alone applications where as the arduino is a little more versatile. The voltage tolerances on the arduino increase the scope of the tasks that can be performed without too much extra circuitry and the current tolerances across the gpio pins is greater. Also once you have built the project it can be easily miniaturised on smaller arduino boards such as the pro mini or nano.

What's the remote for with the starter kit?

Anything you want :o) You could write a program, so that the Arduino will operate a relay. The remote control could be used to tell the Arduino to open or close the relay when you push a button. You could connect LEDs and by pushing different buttons, control the brightness of the LEDs. As said, anything you want.

I haven't had a laptop with a disk drive in 5 years - will k still be able to use this kit ?
