Seagate 3TB Expansion Desktop Ext HDD

Update after several months use... I wondered why my backup software made my mouse so glitchy it made my PC unusable. I find it is, instead, this hard drive, which like many hard drives emits a frequency which can interfere with a wireless mouse (it's the USB adaptor which is vulnerable). With the hard drive within 50 cms of the wireless mouse USB adaptor it was dreadful. Moved to a USB socket on the front of the PC it works fine, nearer to 1 m distance. Original review.... Works with Windows 10, but not the smoothest of operations. Comes with mains adaptor and USB lead (specific to this device). The following was written on first use of this Seagate hard drive... Aaaagh. Gets 22% of way into large backup and freezes. As a consumer I say there are hard drives which work, and those that don't, which are those that freeze, their manufacturers websites don't recognise the Serial Number or even the Model Number and when you try to download their software you click on the link on their website, at first nothing happens and then you find six copies of their software have arrived. My drive quickly passes a Seagate 'Short Test' but Seagate say freezing on doing backups can be down to many Windows problems. Thanks for that, as I'm not a geek and am not about to fiddle around with my perfectly happy computer for the sake of some external hardware. Would have got five stars, but currently down to three. The problem is, if I have a problem on first use, where is this going to go?? Persisting with this Seagate drive, and a bunch of data 800gb copied and pasted in one go, leads to the following interim conclusion. Don't try to run too much else on your pc when copying over large amounts of data. It takes several hours, about 3 in this case for 800gb. Importantly, the progress window you get showing how much data there is yet to copy may or may not be accurate. My first go at 350 gb of other data showed up as recognised as just 3gb and an estimated time of a few minutes. The copying in fact took hours (of course) and copied over the full 350gb. As Seagate say, this is probably a Windows thing, which means if you want a truly what-you-see-is-what-you-get operation you might want to get a specialist to tweak your Windows system according to Seagate's advice page. But the news is, the drive does the basic job very well, and you get your files copied over OK. The truth is, copying such large amounts of data is outside of the daily routine and places stress on resources most users don't usually encounter. Originally, upon receipt and initial plugging in to my computer I wrote the following... Comes with: Mains adaptor, which involves a neat clip-in style 3 pin plug for UK power points, and there's a European 2 pin version, too. USB lead, which has a compact but unusual side-by-side double plug thing you plug into the Seagate (never seen one like it before), the other end is a normal USB plug to go into your computer. Easy plug and play for Windows 10. At first a window opens advising you to wait while the software automatically installs, then a page opens telling you how to set up automatic backups using the Windows facility if you wish to do this. I am just copying files across manually. Looks like it will take hours, days even to transfer. Even with USB 3 whole terabytes are a lot of data to transfer. The Seagate has no mains switch. It will therefore activate anytime you want to interact with it. Like other reviewers I don't like this, as one point of personal data (and other) backups is ensuring that you can keep them physically separate from your operating system in case of viruses etc. Also, and in addition to the problems I have subsequently noted with this drive, I have noticed with other large external drives from Samsung etc that if left running for hours, it is at that point that things can freeze, or cause other operations to hang. Large drives are best used with caution; do what you need to do, and then turn them off! I will get an extension lead with switches on each socket from Amazon to sort this.

Great quality drives. I've been using these and their previous model for running clients backup software to for the past 5 years or so. In all that time and probably over 100+ drives I've only seen one fail and that was down to it being dropped while still connected. Despite that the warranty replacement was fairly quick and painless compared to many I've had to deal with over the years despite it being user error for the fail. When first connected you can go into the root of the drive and there is a setup program to allow you to register the warranty (basically it links straight back to Seagate's main registration site) so you can do this quickly and easily - especially when registering a batch at once. Drive has a decent length power adapter cable (approx. 2 meters) and a 1 meter or so USB connector. LED light only comes on when both cables are connected and active so don't worry if it appears inactive at first with just power cable attached. Also has changeable plug for a European AC socket if you're so inclined. Transfer speeds are good and the drive doesn't weight a ton so are great for taking offsite at night for backup purposes. I also use these myself at home for storage and have one hooked up to an Xbox one for additional drive space. Ended up having to format it on a laptop first before the xbox would recognise and add it (after doing its own format) but I think that was more down to the xbox than the drive itself. Overall I couldn't recommend these drives higher for their mix of good pricing, reliability and ease of use. When buying backup drives for clients these are the fist stop we look at unless specialist (encrypted or rugged) drives are required.

This drive came a lot faster than expected, 2 days before its estimated arrival. So far, had it a few days, it's great. Using it primarily as an Xbox One storage upgrade and it's working like a charm, can practically install my whole game library on this thing with reasonable space left over. It's loading everything perfectly fine, and takes little time to move things from the internal to this drive. I'm not sure if it's made a difference in writing/loading times, I realise there are very detailed and specific writing times which can only be millisecond differences to other drives, which, in my opinion, doesn't matter. As long as it loads everything without problems, which it does, I'm not bothered about 'faster' writing/loading times. Physically, it's a really nice shape, super subtle and clean looking, the fact that it requires mains power is completely fine with me, but may not be with others. My only criticism so far is if it's placed on some kind of wood surface, especially something like a TV stand, you can hear the humming coming from it, although this is EASILY solvable by putting something underneath it to stop the sound completely. Now it's completely quiet. Overall, great product so far, I'm loving it. Definitely worth the price, would recommend.

5TB version. Bought as storage for scanned photos and digitized VHS tapes. The triangular textured design is a nice change to see from the plain design of most enclosures. The LED is blue which lights up to show it's working and a good reminder to unplug it when not needed. Pretty silent operation for a mechanical drive with minimal vibration when under load i.e. large data transfer, benchmarking, Nice Compact enclosure in comparison to size of the drive it houses. I like that it has thin rubber feet on one side with triangular ventilation holes too (image attached) It comes formatted in NTFS and ready to use out the box, worked fine plugged into my Windows 10 & Linux PC's/Laptop, MacBook Air, TV, Scanner. Total actual capacity you'll actually see is 4.54TB, I benchmarked this after 37% of capacity (1.6TB) was transferred and speed looks pretty good for USB 3.0 (Benchmark & Disk Info attached,) connected directly to motherboard USB 3.0 port. Also created a dummy file of 1GB which transferred at average 147MB/s in just under 7 seconds, speed varied between 142-164MB/s, Test file was transferred via SSD to ensure full possible speeds to HDD. Average Temperature varies from Idle 40°C to 50°C during heavy usage. S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Have had no issues with this, A great drive for storage, also run portable applications off of it. You know what; you can never have enough data space these days. For years I have kept a keen eye on ensuring all my data is backed up on 2 NAS raided drives, one acting as main backup with 2 drive Raid, that then backs up to a secondary back up again with a double raid set at raid 1. Then a couple of years ago I started using Cloud data, thinking that would provide a further level of backup. well yes it does, but you are not aware that Google Drive, BOX, Dropbox and as well OneDrive all are Cloud data, but they then use your computer’s hard drive to store everything that’s on the Cloud - So you get a 1TB data space from OneDrive, but your computer only had a 500gb drive... Suddenly you find yourself in a virtual bottle-neck. That’s basically has just happened to me, where I have been using the cloud for current data, that has backed up and filled my NAS drives, causing BOTH units to FAIL!!!! I have just lost 16-years of family photos and work, for no other reason that I thought I was doing the right thing. Making regular backups. But, it all’s been a bit of false sense of security. So as my NAS drives have become full of 97.5% of its data space, the Linux partition/ data isn’t working, so I know have to OFFLOAD whatever I can to get the drives to work again. Both NAS drives have filled to their capacity and there is NO room for the OS to work, so the NAS's have shut down. === I need to Move Data Quick === The only way to get out of this problem is to move all the files out of my Media Server onto a separate disc, so as to give the NAS drive ROOM to start working again with its data, fortunate NO data has been lost; it’s just inaccessible due to data limits being hit. Likewise, I am now currently MOVING massive amounts of data on my Laptop which has a 500mb SSD drive, but again the drive has been FILLED by OneDrives 1TB of data trying to download to my computer. When I took on cloud data storage via OneDrive etc., that’s where I thought it was - in the Cloud, it is but also on my computer. So it’s not in the cloud it’s still sitting on my computer taking up data space – is this a conspiracy created by Microsoft to fill up all computers with data, making them slower and slower forcing people to buy even more drives? With everything being in the cloud, you shouldn’t need large hard drives anymore – perhaps this is where google/ chrome books have got it totally right – makes you think. === How’s this New Seagate Drive === All seems good, installation was straight forward, except that their registration website has the wrong URL, a really daft problem someone has set the URL to[...].... etc Speed wise it’s a FAST DRIVE So far its working great, now managed to offload 270GB of Films and other media off my media server, so slowly but surely getting there as having to manually download from the media sever, due to being out of data space! it’s all so maddening after 30 years working with computers to make such a mistake! Why 4-Star rating? Firstly this is a boring box, nothing special, looks unexciting - I remember when drives looked well designed, this looks like a black fire brick, oh well. also, don't liek the fact that there is no On or OFF button, I may be old, but can't remember when I have just pulled the plug on a drive unit to power it down, umm? Please bring back floppy drives, least then you knew how many disks you had used, with cloud and NAS drives you find out when it’s too late. I will come back and write UPDATES over time to further highlight the performance of this drive unit.

Lately having my pc setup to be a full dlna media server in my home, I noticed I'd managed to fill up my hdd pretty fast and needed to move all my movie files off it. Despite having a bluray writer, the whole burning process is slow and not always perfect, also I already have 2 x 1tb internal drives so adding another internal didn't take my fancy. So came the external drive. Sitting at 3tb, it can hold plenty of data, also equipped with usb 3.0 it can transfer that data fast. Please note though transferring to the drive will vary in speed depending on the source it's coming from, so don't always expect blistering speeds if it's an old HDD your taking data from. But if your transferring data from the external drive to a pc, you can expect some serious speed. So far I've put about 1.8tb of movie files on there and it was all transfered I less than 40 minutes from 2 sources. The drive was then setup as a dlna media drive for my bluray to access. It works perfectly and streams great. As my drive is plugged into my pc, despite having an external power source, it only comed alive when the pc is turned and this is only noticeable because it has a small blue power light, otherwise you wouldn't know it's that quiet.

Amazing Product! I purchased this yesterday and it arrived today (Amazon Prime Membership) and I was extremely happy with the packaging of this external hard drive as it is very lightweight and the box is compact! The hard drive itself is VERY quiet compared to previous external hard drives I've had in the past. It is a nice black compact design with a very pleasing look. It comes with both UK and USA power adaptors which will be handy for when I travel to the states and still want to back everything up and this is very possible due to again it's lightweight deign. It is a USB 3 hard drive so the speeds I'm getting when performing my backups are incredibly fast and the only drive that would be faster than this of similar size would be a Thunderbolt enabled one and those are still extremely expensive unlike like this drive at the excellent price of just £119.98 and I believe that's half price so a great deal! In terms of Mac capability, of course the Mac can read the drive. You just need to format it via Disk Utility and there are many help guides available to help you out. I very much look forward to never losing anything again as I purchased this drive to back up all my other external hard drives and main mac hard disk. I have A LOT of stuff!

This was just great. Solid and reliable and easy to use, until it suddenly, according to my PC, ceased to exist. Now, I realize that I've had it just over two years, and I've taken it for granted. It was just there, in the background, saving all my stuff, lots of it. As I said above, I don't know how long I was supposed to think it would last. It was my main backup. I've still got most of my stuff, almost all of it, scattered about on small external drives and the hard drives of an old PC and laptop. I'd like to put all that stuff back on the big one, but I can't even format it. My computer just tells me to insert a disc into drive I. The only hopeful sign I see is a post by another user who had the same experience as me. He said that Seagates customer service was pure fab and they actually got his drive working again. I'm on here writing this in the hope that someone at Seagate sees it and I end up as happy as that guy. I would have contacted Seagate directly, but Amazon have not provided a link to 'contact the seller'. Presumably because they were the seller, but the folk I need to talk to are the guys n gals who made the thing. I repeat; it's been a great thing, till now, and I just want it back doing its thing and letting me take it for granted.

Il est facile d'installation, fonctionne bien et apporte l'espace nécessaire à ma WII U, ne pouvant plus installer de nouveaux jeux par manque de place. l'alimentation externe évite la surchauffe et garanti son bon fonctionnement.

Très bon produit. Reconnu sitôt branché que ce soit sur pc ou sur lecteur vidéo relié à la Tv. Il vient en complément de celui acheté il y a 3 ans et qui fonctionne toujours. Je vais en acheter un second pour la sauvegarde. Petit plus, j'apprécie sa position verticale qui réduit son encombrement.

Ich habe bzw. hatte bislang einige 3,5“ externe Festplatten im Einsatz. Seagate, Intenso und WD zwischen 1 und 4 GB. Das war die erste 5GB-Platte, die ich mir gekauft habe. Da ich mit Seagate bislang keine Probleme hatte, habe ich mich auf Grund des Preis-Leistungsverhältnisses und besagter Erfahrung für diese Platte entschieden. Zweiter wichtiger Entscheidungsgrund war, dass die Platte steht und nicht wie die allermeisten anderen liegt. Das ist ein wenig platzsparender wenn man einige Platten in Betrieb hat und die nicht übereinanderlegen möchte. Die Optik mit der Waffelstruktur fand ich auch ganz gelungen. Die Platte kam gut verpackt und wurde nach der Bestellung ziemlich zeitnah geliefert. Im Lieferumfang ist die Platte, eine Netzteil und ein USB-Kabel. Das Netzkabel ist ausreichend lang, das USB-Kabel ist etwa ein Meter lang und könnte ein Stück länger sein. Positiv finde ich, dass die Platte einen physischen Ein/Ausschalter hat. Die Platte ist mittlerweile fast voll, der Zugriff funktioniert dennoch sehr zügig. Die Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit ist schnell und bis jetzt gab es noch keinerlei Probleme. Die Platte ist häufig, meist täglich für Updates im Einsatz. Grundsätzlich würde ich es begrüßen, wenn die Netzteilstecker, sowie z.B. bei Apple, einen senkrechten Kabelabgang hätten. Das würde das Nebeneinander einstecken in eine Steckdosenleiste erleichtern und man könnte tatsächlich mal alle Steckplätze nutzen. ***Fazit*** Positiv: -sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis -sehr ordentliche Optik -stehende Verwendung -separater Ein/Ausschalter Negativ: -nichts Kaufempfehlung: uneingeschränkt

Mis impresiones hasta ahora: - Los materiales son de calidad, buena estética. - Se calienta muy poco. - El medidor de consumo eléctrico me da valores entre 4w y 7w, dependiendo de la carga que tenga en cada momento. 0w en reposo. - No es ruidoso, lo tengo a un par de metros del ordenador y creo que no lo he escuchado nunca. - Lo tengo encendido 24/7 desde hace más de una semana. Está conectado a una Banana Pro (tipo Raspberry), funcionando como servidor de ficheros y cliente torrent (rtorrent). De momento todo bien, pero como con cualquier disco duro, a la larga se verá si fue buena inversión. Si da algún tipo de problemas actualizaré la opinión. Lo recomiendo.
