Can the auto sensor be de-activated? Trying to devise a "traffic light" get-up/back-to-sleep guide combined with a timer switch for dementia

The sensor is underneath the device. Covering it causes the light to turn on. Therefore, I'm sure that what you're trying to do could be done easily by sticking some tape over the sensor. The light would then be permanently on as long as it had power. The power switching could be provided - as you suggest - with a timer.

Has anyone experienced burning???

No burning but it did blow our electric at 3am!! I sent it back a bought one from Lidl! I would NOT recommend this item!!
