I would have thought that drill bits would gradually ream out the holes?

You would think so, wouldn't you.  But I have been using mine for a couple of years now and it is still working as new.  I think the reasons are:  1) There is obviously a need for a very small clearance between the OD of the drill bit and the ID of the Gator hole, in order that the drill doesn't simply bind in the hole.  The clearance allows the drill to pass through the Gator readily, but still provides the directional accuracy you need for most jobs.   Secondly you start drilling only when you have actually sunk the drill onto the workpiece surface - so the main cutting tip of the drill isn't in rotational contact with the Gator's internal surface.  Thirdly, I suspect the geometry of a twist drill is primarily designed to create the initial chip at the tip of the bit, and then enable that material to move up and away from the workpiece.  It is not designed to 'dig in' to the sides of the hole. Although you can open out a hole (especially in soft material) by willfully 'waggling' the drill to engage the shank sides with the inside of the hole, my guess is that, unlike a reaming tool, the twist drill geometry isn't set up to cut into the sides.  And perhaps that last point is mainly why it doesn't seem to wear much.   Hope this helps.
