A brilliant recreation of my favourite Star Wars droid
As a mid-late forties man I am not ashamed to admit that I got this for myself. Huge fan of Star Wars, love geeky toys and tech and loved the look of what they've done this. The price drop and availability made me decide to go for it. I have to say it's an impressive piece of kit. It's not huge, standing less than 7 inches tall, but not tiny either. It feels solid and well put together and it looks perfect (perhaps not the finish you can get with build you own models costing ten times more but good none the less). It comes beautifully packed in a solid premium box (that i will be keeping should it store it at some stage). Set-up is very easy; simply plug the usb into a usb charging plug or device, download the app on your device (I used an Ipad Pro) and connect it. It updates the firmware and then Artoo is all yours. Using it is very easy. There are various modes including a remote control mode, a patrol mode where Artoo will wander around by himself, an AR mode (which feels fairly tacked on really) and a viewing mode where he will react to key moments in the movies. Thee is also a sphero education app that allows you to control r2 via a block based code editor or JavaScript. I’ve yet to play with this but will be messing with the JavaScript based editor soon. Artoo himself is lovely. His movement is spot on and the retractable third leg adds a real air of authenticity. His sounds and head movements feel totalkly authentic. He's a truly great fun toy for fans of all ages. Overall I am delighted with it, it will get lots of attention and look great on the shelf when it doesn't. I have given it 5 stars because I do love it but my one caveat would be the price. It is quite a lot to pay and i can understand this makes it a premium product and not for everyone. If resources allow though and you love Star Wars and Artoo? Well worth it!

Great fun for anyone
For any Star Wars fan this is a great purchase. The detail and quality is very impressive. The setup is really straightforward. You can download the app for the iPhone and Android. I brought this as a Christmas present and added the app to both Android and iPhone. Once connected go into your phone/ tablet settings and turn on Bluetooth and scan for devices. The droid has no on/ off button so it’s always ready once you start the app. It’s a lot of fun and it’s quite fast and easy to control. It comes with multiple gestures and also an AR mode. R2D2 allows you to roam around the Millennium Falcon which is cool. In the box you get a USB charging cable which needs to plug into a usb slot. There’s no plug for charging but that’s not an issue. Really impressed and has all the gestures you’ve seen in the films. Takes about 30 minutes to charge.

R2 is great
R2 arrived and it looks great, if only it was a little bigger. Pros. It does look fantastic, the patrol mode is very good, he will move around on his own and map out the room, as he goes he makes noises and you can also set him up to interact with humans or other Sphero's, how good the interaction is I have yet to test., I got R2 on an Amazon special, with this in mind I would still say that this is a very expensive executive grown up toy, I don't think that it has enough features to keep a child entertained beyond an initial cool factor. If you can get a dev kit to programme R2, that would take it to another level Cons: although the app looks good, functionality is a bit limited, for example I haven't found a way to use the app on my iPhone and also take a video of R2, as soon as you swap apps, Sphero loses connection, this limits the experience in my opinion.

So much fun!
I love my little R2, he's great fun!. He comes in a nice looking, sturdy box and was perfect apart from one little scratch in the paint which is not that noticeable. I'm sure I'll drive him into enough furniture to scratch off more paint shortly so I didn't think it was worth returning it for such a small scratch.Once you install the app he is very easy to operate but using a tablet is easier than on a phone (although if you have a large phone it's probably fine). They seem to have made an effort to recreate R2's personality as when set in human interaction mode he whistles and warbles to get attention. I haven't tried watching a Star Wars film with him yet but I'm confident he will be entertaining! Overall I think it's money well spent and I'm tempted to get a BB8 to see how they interact together.

Very Nice.
Great product. Let down by a poor app. From the moment I got this I knew it was going to be a quality product. The box is nice, strong, and holds the device well. And it actually felt nice unboxing this. The droid is well made, quite heavy, and doesn't take too long to charge. It stands up by itself, and really looks the part with the attention to detail that is second to none. It really does feel like a quality product, and not a cheap piece of plastic. And now the now the not so good. The App, it's just awful. You start by downloading it from the Google Play Store, it's a free download, and around 128Mb in size - so use Wi-fi to get it. This is where it gets bad. First off, if you like and enjoy your privacy then (like myself) you won't like the fact that this app will NOT work offline. You need to be online, and have Location Services switched on. If you go offline/Airplane mode and switch off Location Services then the app simply refuses to work. Quite why, is beyond me. The devs say they don't track your actual location, ok, so why the need for my location on a app that is used locally ? The app also requires access to your files, photos, etc.. this maybe just for saving/loading - not 100% sure. On to the app itself. It starts, every single time, with a pointless Star Wars loading screen, music, sounds, that just takes too long to load. If this was a once off, then fine. But it's not, it's every damn time. You then get to select your droid, the app is used by all 4 of Sphero's Droids. Now this is where is either works or crashes, same place, every time. Either works or doesn't. If it works you're taken to the first part where you can rotate the droid to test, click the bottom icon and you're on the main screen. Because there is no help with this you can get lost in what does what. The icons do have graphic pics of what they're supposed to do but often it's not what you "think" it does based on the icon picture. Controlling the droid is from the left-side via a large circle. This makes little sense because there should be directions like a compass but there isn't, and you often go in the wrong direction to where you think you are going. Really frustrating. Comeon, Sphero, add compass points to the control circle then at least you have a idea where you want to go. If you're a Star Wars fan then I would recommend this since it is a quality product. Just let down with a poorly written, poorly though out app. If Sphero can fix this app and keep decent patches coming then this would make a perfect product.

Great support and awesome droid
Ok, I normally wouldn’t give an item 5 stars if I have had to send it back to get a replacement like I have had to do with this one. However, this is a special case. Let me explain. When he (yes he, you can’t help it in the end) arrived he unfortunately went all over the place when connected to my iPhone. I contacted the Sphero help desk and I have to say they were VERY helpful and supportive. They unfortunately couldn’t solve the issue and recommended I return him. I did so and now thanks to Amazons equally swift response, I am now the proud owner of a fully functional R2D2! It has to be the best Star Wars toy out there. Everything about R2 is there and just makes you smile whenever you switch him on. I’m giving 5 stars as 1. He’s great! Loads of functions, watch’s films with you, drives like a maniac and is programmable to boot! 2. Excellent service support from Sphero (seriously impressed. That’s what all support should be like) 3. Worth every penny (for a Star Wars fan anyway) Have fun and may the force be with you :)

This is the Droid you're looking for!
Absolutely love this little R2, the attention to detail is brilliant enough to have him as a shelf ornament, if thats your thing. However, he really comes to life with the 'droids' app, Sphero have proper nailed the movement and the R2-D2 reactions sounds etc. Even have the Jawa electrocution nose, then R2-D2 falls over! 🤣 I was unbelievably lucky as got mine yesterday and had an android device, so I accepted that you couldn't use the 'watch with me' functionality on the driods app. But to my surprise its been sorted on the 14/05 so happy days. I've just watched Episode 4 with my little R2, which was fantastic. Only downside is if you have pets no matter how much you vacuum, he still gets dust and hairs in his tracks, I just use a small paint brush to clear them out after every use. A must for every Starwars fan, young or old! 👍

It’s deffo one to buy it’s an amazing toy to have he’s my little gem now lol
Now this little gods gift toy is one off the best things I’ve brought it does everything it says it does but don’t go for the cheaper ones it needs to be the proper one As there are some cheap ones and they won’t do what this little fellow can do it’s an amazing R2D2 all in all I would deffo recommend you might think it’s a bit pricey but trust me it’s worth every penny he’s just so phone and it’s all controlled from your phone through a app or he can just explore on he’s own he talks to you. would be a lot better if he had a camera inside of him so u could control it from larger distance but that’s the only problem I think it’s got brilliant all round

Unfassbar.
So niedlich.
