Would a Nexus 5 fit this stand?

Probably! My iPhone 7 plus fits in this comfortably.

Do you think its better than clip on desk ones? I can't decide to go with this or clip on.

In my opinion, yes. We use ours for videoing our desk whilst working & clip on an iPad for face videos. We used to use a clip on holder, but it picked up to much vibrations on the desk. This stand is a lot more stable and less camera wobble. Obviously the price has to factor into you decision & it took us a while before we purchased this one. Hope that has helped
