Is there a trick to remove the plastic stopper/seal underneath the screw-top? I've been hacking at it with various implements but not having much luck

This must be a recent addition for safety or something. I bought mine about 2 years ago and it didn't have a plastic stopper/seal. Ask the supplier?

Hello JanieI was using it to etch copper. You shouldn't dilute it if you are using it for that purpose. If you are using it as an etch at have a look at Edinburgh etch which uses mixed Ferric Chloride and Citric acid. This works far better and produces deep clean etches.

I only use it to etch copper printed circuit boards. Sorry I can't answer your question about silver
