As per a previous purchaser we have found it imposible to remove the lid. Has anyone else had this problem and got a solution?

Same here - just had to wrap a towel around the top and grip it between my teeth and rotate the bottle - no chance of doing it the normal way i.e. push down and twist.

Is this suitable to for metal firepit?

yes it is fine. again using a cloth with the oil on it. I have used it on my log burner fire.

Can it be used to preserve wood?

Yes but there are many products much cheaper that will preserve wood
