Intel NUC6i5SYK Barebone Mini PC Next Unit of Computing Kit (Black/Silver) - (Intel core i5 1.8 GHz, Intel HD Graphics 540)

An amazing platform by Intel. The construction is aluminum body with a plastic lid. It comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports in the back, and 2 in the front. Ther are also internal USB 2.0 ports. Additionally, it features a gigabit Ethernet port as well as WiFi and it also has a card reader. I have been running linux on mine and the performance is great with NVMe SSD and 16GB RAM. It is small and doesn't weight much so it is quite easy to transport if you need to. I do some light development and testing on mine and i find it very convenient to take with me any time i want to demonstrate something in the lab and then work on it at home. So in a sense it has substituted my laptop to a certain extent because it is much more compact than a laptop and where are I use it there is always a spare monitor and keyboard/mouse. Speaking of monitors, the device provides HDMI and miniDP. One thing worth noting is that the CPU is i5 but it is not a quad core. It is a dual core with hyperthreading which gives you 4 logical processors to play with. This doesn't mean in any way that this machine is not capable of doing the usual light office stuff and web browsing. It will even do some of the older games without much trouble. For anyone who doesn't have very high computing requirements and mostly spend their time on facebook, youtube, emailing, etc., this is a perfect alternative to a desktop and this particular model will happily do some basic and video photo editing for the aforementioned applications. It is silent, compact and consumes a tiny fraction of the electricity that a desktop PC would use. I can't recomment it enough for people that have basic computing requirements and don't want a full desktop computer at home. Similarly, it will do great in an office environment as it features Intel's Management Engine for centralised management of all the NUCs in the office and also has a kensington lock.

Fantastic little box which is being used as a HTPC. These boxes are supplied as "bare-bones" so you need to also buy memory, solid-state drive, OS, keyboard, mouse, etc. I fitted mine out with Kingston HyperX 16GB 2133MHz DDR4 SODIMMs, Windows 10 64-bit Home, SanDisk SD8SN8U-1T00-1122 X400 1TB M2 drive, and a little Rii bluetooth keyboard. No issues installing, really neat and tidy, and runs silent as far as I can tell. Only needs two cables in my setup - power and HDMI. Has built-in WiFi, bluetooth, and IR sensor. I have it connected up to a 65in 4K Panasonic TV and its superb. The NUC's graphics card has no problems supporting the resolution and Windows 10 seems pretty good at scaling text as required. I haven't tried it with any sort of gaming so can't comment on that sort of performance but its great for general browsing, videos, etc. The sound also has no problems running through the connected home cinema soundbar either. Lots of other reviews say to update the BIOS which I did. Not had any performance or stability problems. Intel website was easy to use for finding all the necessary drivers and updates for my Win10 install. There is also Intel software available to run a remote keyboard application on your phone/tablet but I haven't tried that. There is also an IR sensor, but again haven't used that. Can get a bit pricey as a complete system once you add in all the extras, but I think really good value given its size and features. Ideal as an HTPC and sits discretely on top of my Sky box in my lounge.

Really nice machines. I love them. Always use Arch linux on them and it works great.

While I really like the form factor, size, quiet operation and features, I have found Linux (Ubunutu 16.04) support to be a bit hit or miss. Everything works, but I experienced regular graphics problems while using the Unity desktop environment. The thing would hard freeze multiple times per day, occasionally recovering but more often than not requiring a power cycle. There is some compatibility issue with the IGP but I haven't been able to resolve it. This doesn't happen using Gnome so I have switched to that. The machine is still unable to soft reboot however, so I have to power cycle every time I try to do this. Windows users might have more luck. Having used Linux on Thinkpads for years with zero problems, this has been a frustrating experience.

So far so good with this tiny little PC. It's very quiet, well made and speedy enough for my needs. I have quickly run out of USB ports on it mind you but I guess that's the price you pay for miniaturisation.

A great little barebone computer with a small, compact form factor. The CPU is pretty powerful for typical tasks like watching movies or browsing the internet. I've even been running some basic 3D games without any performance issues. I've not experienced any problems with sound from the internal fan, nor any complications hardware wise. This model doesn't come with an infrared receiver, I had to buy a USB receiver. Otherwise, can't fault this product at all!

I've added 8GB RAM and Samsung 950 PRO M2 SSD and it flies with Windows 10. So fast and almost silent with day to day tasks. I'd recommend making sure you update the BIOS after you've inserted your components but before you do anything else (i.e. before you install your operating system); BIOS version 0045 is the latest at the time of writing - have a look on the Intel Download Centre...

Dont buy it from Kikatek! Mine after a few month usage started to turn off/restart randomly and frequently. It became usless so I sent it back for a replace to Kikatek a month ago, and still dont have a workable computer. I am not happy.

Broke after light use over 10 months. Now I need to figure out how the warranty works. I have the previous generation i3 and it runs 24/7 without issue though.

Yes, intel released a bad product before; however, it was an advanced problem Itel needed some time to fix; which they did. let me start with this unit is NOT defective anymore, as long as you have BIOS 42, you will have a blue dot on the bottom (fixing the voltage regulator on the motherboard). I did not, it came with BIOS 28 and I updated immediately. Let's get that out of the way, not defective anymore, here are the details I purchased the previous version. While I loved it, there were 2 things that really made me upset at Intel for it, and I could not live with it. I originally, (before the 5th gen) had an ACER UX305 w/ i3 4160, 8GB RAM, Crucial 256SSD, and a GT 730 1GB DDR5. It flew and I liked it! However, I have an IT business and wanted to have a NUC for myself, so figured that ACER will be sold to a customer. I tell you all this because I was replacing an already fast computer. The 5th gen was awesome, but two things I couldn't deal with. 1.) Awful HD 6000 graphics. Usually, the graphics are pretty admirable for internal graphics, but the NUC sounded like a jet engine with old games like AOE III AOM, etc. It cried and screamed because of the heat. And a lot of games usually playable on desktops (because the card didn't throttle with the heat), were not on the NUC. Intel advertised it as a "LAN PARTY". What a joke. 2.) Mini HDMI, so many units you needed a connector. I knew this when buying, but it ended up really bothering me. I returned the unit. Now for the 6th Gen: I paired it with Hyper 16GB 2113 Speed Memory, Samsung 950 Pro, and Windows 10. It's laughable how fast it boots (5 seconds with intel rapid technology and fast boot enabled in BIOS. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROS -The skylake chip is only 10% faster than the last version in "general computing", but the Iris chip is AWESOME! I do not play games much, but like to occasionally. I max out AOEIII and get 60fps. yes, the graphics are that good! This graphics chip I am 100% satisfied and JUST is enough of power for me. Finally, intel can brag about integrated graphics, just as good as my discrete GT 730 1GB DDR5 card -I am OCD about fan noise, the NUC is SILENT in general computing, but playing games the fan understandably comes on. And fan noise is that of a laptop. I replaced my whole tower because of how efficient this chip is. Can get very hot on games though (95C-max temp is around 105 so still OK for hour bursts) -Visual BIOS is great to work in. I love this part. TIP: adjust fan speed from 35 to 30, it makes the unit completely silent while still keeping temps 40C at idle (my room can get hot around 73F, so 40C for the chip is more than fine. I would not recommend changing anything else, as the fan needs to go to "emergency mode" if need be. -FAST FAST FAST! I have to mention how much I love the chip again. It's nearly as fast as my 4160, a true compliment for 15W chip. -Minuscule, but you will save probably $50-$75 a year on this vs a "desktop" chip consuming 10x more watts. -Small! Can unplug my cables and transfer it anywhere. I move a lot for my job, this is a nice bonus. Plus, something is really cool having your computer the size of your palm, I may sound like I am an idiot for doing it, but I sometimes pick it up randomly, in dismay this thing can be as powerful as a mid-high to high end range desktop. -FULL HDMI Port! No bull mini hdmi port, allowing a lot more devices to connect easier. -Mini Display port (if you want to add another display, pretty nice) -4 USB 3.0 ports, 2 in the back 2 in front (1 fast charge). Nice because I have my keyboard and mouse usb, and my speakers usb (powered by NUC) -Full Ethernet port -FAST and nice AC wireless card -Multiple plug ports if you travel internationally -Great motherboard layout & stable as heck -Looks sexy ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONS (nitpicking) -Gets hot but that's because of the case of how small the case is -Expensive....Intel could lower this a little -Still mad Intel classified the last version as "LAN PARTY" worthy, pretty much false advertisements Honestly, if you want a NUC get this one.

Got this "6th generation" NUC, added 16GB RAM and a Transcend 256GB M.2 SSD (Samsung was sold out). connected to a Dell 2705 (2560x1600) via HDMI. Installed Ubuntu and everything works just fine. Mounted on the back of the monitor - out of sight, out of mind. You get the performance of a MacBook Pro for around 600 Euro (plus screen and keyboard). Only annoyance was that the slim version was slightly more expensive than the bigger one that can take a 2.5" drive.
