One of the most useful functions of a modern lathe is its ability to cut any form of external or internal thread of any thread form, pitch or diameter within the overall capacity of the machine. Detailed information of a practical nature is, however, not easy to find - a situation that this book does much to rectify. The author was a very experienced engineer with the capability of converting factual analyses into easily understood forms. His own expertise and the standards to which he worked are evident in his writing, and in addition he is also quite at home with both imperial and metric measures having considerable experience in the conversions required when working in partially metricated areas. This book is not only an invaluable treatise on lathe screwcutting but is also a useful demonstration of working in both imperial and metric standards. Review: Great Book - Excellent Book On Screwcutting Review: Screwcutting on the lathe. - The book arrived promptly and well packaged, with correct postage pre-paid. The explanations and examples are well done for even the novice, me, to understand. I've just got my first mini-lathe and made many threads now, both external and internal. The book instructed me on what to buy in the way of tools and how to grind the correct angles to achieve the required thread. The section on setting up the lathe screw gears is heavy and very detailed. I read this through many times but still not sure I've grasped the theory, even though I've achieved some great threads of all sizes. 2BA to M3 to 20mm pipe connection on conduit. That's the largest size I can get through the bore of my headstock.

ideal book for info.
I bought it on a whim after reading a review in engineering magazine so I am not up to speed on the subject as yet. Being the first time user of a lathe so time will tell .

Practical and useful information from an old classic
A modern printing of an old classic, from the late, talented, Martin Cleeve. I have an older version of this book, but this is a nice freah copy at a very reasonable price. The detail about threadforms is limited by the limited page count, but the information is both practical and useful.

Excellent Book
For someone who has not been trained as an engineer but has a strong interest in lathe work, the book is easy to read and follow

Not recommended if you've got a lathe with a screw-cutting gearbox.
This is a very detailed and exhaustive book about screw cutting on the lathe. It's very academic, but it suffers from few fundamental prejudices. The author is a purist who writes from the premise that all lathes should be simple and that they must only use change wheels to set up the thread pitches. If you have a lathe with a screw cutting gearbox then I wouldn't rush to buy this book because the author dismisses screw-cutting gearboxes in a couple of paragraphs and nearly all the book is dedicated solely to change wheel screw cutting. He has a rant about screw cutting gearboxes limiting the permutations of threads available and whilst this is undoubtably true, most amateur machinist will want to cut standard thread sizes and the screw cutting gearbox provides these. Indeed, unless you have a particular penchant for doing things the hard way then most small to medium diameter threads will be cut with taps and dies mounted from the tail stock. I have this book but there are much better books in this series, notably those written by Harold Hall, amongst others.

This book will instruct anyone in great detail how to use a lathe for screwcutting and I am most impressed and pleased with it and highly recommend it to anyone who has never tried to cut screws.

Very Thorough and Detailed
This series of books is very technical. I was hoping for a high school level course but these seem more college oriented. But, I can't complain about a product being TOO good, can I?
