A slightly overlooked gem
"On the up" only ran for 3 series as was on TV for just 2 years, However it was one of those comedy shows that always stuck in my mind. Even now 18 years later its still a wonderful piece of television. Its very funny and sometimes touching at the same time. The show manages to cover the class divide, breaking up of a marriage and how that effects the child, friendship you name it. All done without getting too soppy, The comedy shines through.A strong cast bring this show to life and Joan Sims and Sam Kelly really shine here. The wonderful late great Joan Sims as the Sherry drinking Mrs Wembley is just legendary, and her saying "Just the one" no matter how many she has had, Sublime.Sam Kelly as chauffeur and friend to Tony Carpenter(Dennis Waterman) is also a real highlight and often totally steals the show.Buy it if you like British comedy, Buy it if you like Dennis Waterman, Its not rude its not crude, Its well written and well acted.Enjoy

Gentle Classic Comedy Gem That Deserves Another Outing On TV Screens
On The Up is a classic comedy gem that todays script writers need to look at to see how you write a sitcom that is not vulgar in which the whole family is able to sit down and watch unlike the crude shows of today!Written by Bob Larbey whose other famous sitcom is A Fine Romance that starred Judi Dench and Michael Williams, here he has a vehicle for Dennis Waterman who at this point mainly known for The Sweeney and Minder stars as Tony Carpenter a self made millonaire and owner and executive of a profitable car hire business may have made his way up to the top of the ladder has never forgotten his East-End Roots and instead of treating his employees like slaves thinks more of them as friends much to his posh wife's disgust who looks down on them as servants who should be seen but not heard. We have the wonderful and talented Joan Sims who plays Mrs Wembley the household cook and has that immortal catchphrase "Just The One" when gets asked weather or not wants a glass of sherry.Sam Kelly known for being in comedy series Porridge or Allo Allo plays Tony's longtime friend and chauffeur Sam along with Jenna Russell (Born and Bred) who is his personal assistant Maggie.Shame we have to go back to the classics like On The Up, A Fine Romance, Sink or Swim, Are You Being Served, That's My Boy, You Rang M'Lord, Hi-De-Hi, Dads Army, Sorry, Last Of The Summer Wine and many more who had fantastic writers sadly lacking in todays world of reality shows. This is a must for anybody who loves good old fashioned sitcoms, Joan Simms is in her element playing Mrs Wembley and the banter between her and Sam Kelly is very funny.

Loved this.
We thoroughly enjoyed watching this. How refreshing to be able to sit and watch a genuinely funny sitcom and not squirm at the bad language or innuendos. Likeable characters (except for the wife!) and such fabulous people playing them, including Dennis Waterman, Sam Kelly, Joan Sims (Just the one!) and in the first series, Dora Bryan.

A laugh out loud comedy.
Although a bit dated, it is still much funnier than a lot of modern comedy's.

An Absolute Favourite
We watched this series when first shown on TV and thoroughly enjoyed it then. It was wonderful to spend time with Dennis Waterman, Joan Sims and Sam Kelly all over again. The acting was absolutely superb - we frequently found ourselves sitting up quite late to watch the next and even the next instalment. We knew we would be in for a relaxing and enjoyable time caught up in the day to day lives of these three wonderful characters. I suppose Sam Kelly was our absolute favourite but all three of them were a joy to watch. One very sad moment - when we came to the last disc. We knew we would miss Tony, Mrs. Wembley and Sam and the time spent away from day to day cares. 'On The Up' will definitely not be put away and forgotten. Given time it will be brought out again and hopefully again and again. If you enjoyed it first time round, or missed it completely then we recommend without hesitation that you go ahead and buy it.

Great series!
This series completely passed me by originally, so when I came across it recently on TV I was intrigued. I enjoyed a few episodes so decided to get the full boxset. Really enjoyable, warm series which could have done with a season 4. The characters are well written and likeable and I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys lighthearted, cosy comedy.

British Comedy bar none
British comedy at its best. A series that while it will result in laughter at the same time there is something of a bond with the three main characters. Actors who will surely be missed.
