Does coaster light up as per the customer pics?

No does not light up, my box did not have lights on it or in it, bought from new, my son, 8 absolutely loved it, me (mum) built most of it, took 2 days in the Halloween break but when we got near the end he joined in, I still do not have the heart to take it down yet :)

Does this only go together in one set way, or can it be changed as more of an open, free-play option?

Yes it can be rearranged, especially if you have an imaginative , creative child working on it. My grandchild has loved it. He has also got the other roller coaster one and joined the two sets together to make a gigantic st up. construction
