Of all the most beautiful and moving films about motherhood, family and forgiveness, Pedro Almodóvar's Volver is pretty close to the top - probably neck and neck with All About My Mother (Todo sobre mi madre). Penelope Cruz’s performance as Raimunda, returning to her hometown after her mother’s death, is still spellbinding 20 years later and a high point in her career, especially in Spanish. It’s amazing how the humour carries across the language barrier, and that’s in part due to her unforgettable performance! The cinematography, costume design (as always) and twists and turns only add to the film’s perfection. Also worth noting is the accurate and faithful subtitling. A must-see for mothers, daughters and Almodovar fans - even if you’ve got no knowledge of the Spanish language.

Penelope Cruz gives a standout performance as Raimunda in this strange tale of a village where most of the men are lovingly tended to in cemetery plots. The story takes many twists and turns, but principally this is a tale about Raimunda's indefatigable spirit and protection of her daughter. Almodovar captures the rhythm and feeling of small town life in Spain as Raimunda enlists the services of her neighbors to revive a restaurant, which becomes the hub of activities while the owner is away. In so doing, Raimunda hopes to disguise the sinister events that have taken place. Raimunda's sister, Sole, harbors a blithe spirit of sorts, whose return provides the premise for the movie and eventually answers many questions that are put forward. Augustina completes this provincial triptych as a hippie of sorts, who is forced to come to terms with her life when she finds out she has cancer. The characters feed off each other in typical Almodovarian fashion, but it is a conventional movie by his quixotic standards, and one of his most satisfying efforts, as it is sure to appeal across a broad spectrum of viewers, especially given Penelope Cruz' excellent performance.

Volver is a truly exceptional film and one well worth buying on DVD because it's the kind of film you're likely to want to watch time after time. The outstanding performances of all the actresses (and not just the delectable Penelope Cruz) are reason enough to delight the viewers, but in addition, despite the seriousness of the issues the film addresses, Almodovar has managed quite a bit of tongue-in-cheek humour. Indeed, at times it has an almost Dali-esque quality. A nice bonus is the interview with Almodovar and the actresses, all sitting around a big round table, and unlike some boring interviews one sometimes find as a bonus with DVDs of directors with an ego of Napoleonic proportions who just drivel on, this interview is worth the price of the DVD in itself.

Had to study Volver for A Level Spanish... wasn’t majorly interesting at first but perhaps that was because my Spanish wasn’t that developed at the beginning so it was a bit like meh, but I watched it again before my exam and I enjoyed it !! it’s a bit long but it has an interesting storyline and if you know context or background of Almodóvar it’s even more so

Having seen this film three times in the cinema, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Each time I sat there with a wide grin planted firmly on my face. As the previous reviewer explained, you never quite know where this movie will take you next. Comedy, thriller, drama, mystery; Volver has it all! It will definately make you laugh, and probably trigger tears of emotion too. Penelope Cruz is a revelation. She is not only watchable (unlike her performances in English language films), but positively electric as she struts the streets of Madrid in a variety tight dresses, bouffant hairdos and stacked wedges. Not content with one award-worthy performance, Almodovar adds to this a supporting (almost all female) cast who play it pitch-perfect across the board. Don't miss this one!

I’ve been meaning to leave a review on this for ages. It’s a wonderful film for which the six main actresses deservedly won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. There’s no point in my going over the storyline, but it covers the relationships between women (mother/daughter, sisters, friends) with great truthfulness and a lot of humour but it is not ‘fluffy’, there’s an underlying grit running through the narrative. If you’re usually put off by subtitles, give this film a go, you’ll soon find yourself so absorbed you’ll forget about the subtitles.

Why does the version sold in europe not have subtitles, but the version sold in the US does?

Es la segunda vez que la compro, la segunda me llegó sin subtítulos en español, a pesar de que la pedí con ellos y así la anunciaban. Pero ahora todo correcto. Gran actriz Penélope Cruz y el resto del equipo también. La recomiendo mucho.

Die Konkurrenz war in diesem Jahrgang mit Helen Mirren (Die Queen), Kate Winslet (Little Children), Meryl Streep (Der Teufel trägt Prada) und Judi Dench (Tagebuch eines Skandals) besonders stark. Es gewann am Ende Helen Mirren und Penelope Cruz musste zwei Jahre warten - 2009 bekam sie den Oscar für ihre Nebenrolle in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". Bei der Vergabe des europäischen Filmpreises im Jahr 2006 gewann "Volver" insgesamt fünf Auszeichnungen. Zwei gingen an Almodovar (beste Regie/Publikunspreis), ein weiterer an Kameramann Jose Luis Alcaine. Alberto Iglesias wurde für die Filmmusik ausgezeichnet und Penelope Cruz wurde zur besten Darstellerin gekürt. Es ist vielleicht die beste Rolle der spanischen Schauspielerin - hier erinnert sie an Dynamik und das Temperament der jungen Sophia Loren. "Volver" dreht sich um eine exzentrische Frauenfamilie aus einer windgepeitschten Region südlich von Madrid. Cruz spielt Raimunda, eine Frau aus der Arbeiterklasse, die alles tun muss, um ihre 14-jährige Tochter Paula zu beschützen. Zu allem Überfluss kehrt ihre Mutter Irene von den Toten zurück, um die losen Enden zu verknüpfen. Raimunda (Penelope Cruz) und ihre Tochter Paula (Yohanna Cobo) leben mit Raimundas Ehemann Paco (Antonio de la Torre) zusammen, den Paula für ihren Vater hält. Als Paco versucht, Paula zu vergewaltigen und behauptet, er sei nicht ihr Vater, ersticht Paula ihn aus Selbstverteidigung. Raimunda behauptet, ihr Mann sei weggelaufen und versteckt seine Leiche in der Tiefkühltruhe eines nahegelegenen Restaurants, auf das sie für den abwesenden Besitzer Emilio aufpasst. Als Mitglieder eines Filmteams ins Restaurant kommen, um eine Woche lang Mahlzeiten zu liefern, schließt die findige Raimunda einen Deal ab, um in der Abwesenheit ihres Mannes dringend benötigtes Geld zu verdienen. Als Sole dem Geist ihrer Mutter selbst im Haus ihrer Tante Paula begegnet, stellt sie bei ihrer Rückkehr nach Madrid fest, dass sich der Geist im Kofferraum ihres Autos versteckt hat. Sole lässt Irene bei sich wohnen, um ihr in dem illegalen Friseursalon auszuhelfen, den Sole von ihrer Wohnung aus betreibt. Dabei gibt sie sich als russische Einwanderin aus, die kein Spanisch spricht. Die beiden verheimlichen Irenes Anwesenheit vor Raimunda, die ihre Mutter hasst. Raimunda enthüllt Paula, dass Paco nicht ihr leiblicher Vater war, und verspricht, ihr später die ganze Geschichte zu erzählen. Raimunda lässt Paula bei Sole zurück und mietet mit Hilfe zweier bezahlter, ebenso kritikloser Nachbarinnen einen Lieferwagen. Sie transportiert die Gefriertruhe mit der Leiche zu einer Stelle am Fluss Júcar, wo sie diese begräbt. Währenddessen kommt Agustina, bei der Krebs im Endstadium diagnostiziert wurde, zur Behandlung nach Madrid. Als Raimunda sie im Krankenhaus besucht, fragt Agustina Raimunda, ob sie den Geist ihrer Mutter gesehen habe. Raimunda befürchtet, dass auch Agustina an Demenz leidet. Agustina hofft, der Geist könne ihr von ihrer eigenen Mutter erzählen, die vor drei Jahren verschwunden ist. Während ihres Aufenthalts in Soles Wohnung begegnet Paula dem Geist ihrer Großmutter und kommt ihr näher. In der nächsten Nacht kommt Agustina ins Restaurant und enthüllt zwei überraschende Geheimnisse: Ihre Mutter und Raimundas Vater hatten eine Affäre, und ihre Mutter verschwand am selben Tag, an dem Raimundas Eltern starben... Der Film stammt aus Almodovars stärkster Schaffenphase, was auch die Vorgängerfilme "Sprich mit ihr", "La Mala Education" und "Alles über meine Mutter"eindrücklich beweisen. Sämtliche Darstellerin spielen grandios - in Cannes wurden das gesamte weibliche Darstellerensemble Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas,Yohana Cobo, Blnaca Portillo und Chus Lampreave mit dem Preis "Beste Darstellerin" ausgezeichnet. Details der Geschichte – Tod, Krebs, Verrat, Verlassenwerden durch die Eltern, noch mehr Tod – zu erzählen, würde einen Eindruck von Trostlosigkeit und Leid erwecken. Doch nichts könnte weiter vom Geist von „Volver“ entfernt sein, der heiter ist, ohne leichtfertig zu wirken, und tröstend, ohne jemals rührselig zu werden. Herr Almodóvar erkennt das Unglück an – und nimmt es ernst – aus einer Perspektive, die im Grunde komisch ist. Nur wenige Filmemacher haben es geschafft, Elend und Verhängnis so überzeugend zu lächeln - es ist einer der leichtesten Filme von Almodovar. Natürlich wurde die Leistung auch an der Kinokasse mit einem Umsatz von 87,2 Millionen Dollar äusserst üppig belohnt.

ある意味、恐ろしくもあり阿保らしいいストリーですが、魅了するするのは女優の魅力とスペイン文化というか、お皿の模様やドレスの柄の美しさ、そして何より木を刻むペネロペの表情です。百聞は一見に如かず、みなけりゃわからない。素敵な映画です。
