How does this trick work?

A thin elastic band goes around the coin in a grove to hold the two halves together

Are the extra bands latex free? As these don`t dry out and quickly become brittle like natural rubber latex bands do.

The ones I have are latex free, I use 2 bitten coins for one effect and not had any issues with the bands still in good working order...

how do you get extra rubber bands once you run out?

You get a few extra with the coin. And I am pretty sure you can buy bags of them from amazon.
