Walabot DIY 2 – Visual Stud Finder & Wall Scanner for Drywall. Detects Wood & Metal Studs, Plastic & Metal Pipes, Live & Non-Live Wires

If you are a homeowner, this tool is a must. I spent a lot of time trying to find the center of a stud in my ceiling with a Zircon. I've used the Zircon many times with success, but it wasn't happening this time - finding the center of the stud this time was painful with unreliable results. I wound up drilling where I thought was a stud, only to run into a goose egg. I purchased the Walabot and had a visual center of the stud in 30 seconds. The price stinks, but as most times in life, you get what you pay for. I'll end the boring story and give my pros and cons. Pros: 1. Visual representation of what's in the wall 2. This newer unit connects via WI-FI 3. Reliable results in seconds Cons: 1. You have to calibrate by making large circles in the area. If you are a perfectionist like me, it stinks because of the paint sometimes getting scratched or rubbed off. All stud finders do this, but this has the potential to happen in an area that might not get covered. To have to do this on a new wall would be tough. 2. Can't easily tell between a pipe and a wire (still better than what's out there) 3. Having to have to use the stud finder with a phone can turn this into a two person job many times 4. There is maintenance for this unit. You can't let the battery deplete because there is a chance that it may not charge again. I've heard of overcharging, but not the reverse. I will have to set a reminder to charge at regular intervals. 5. The directions say that you have to charge with the cable provided, but don't provide a charger. This is weird and I don't get that - one more thing to have to remember. Make no mistake, there are more cons than pro's, but it wouldn't even come close to stop me from buying this thing. The device is worth every penny.

What an excellent and usefull Home DIY Tool !! I have tried various "typical" Stud-Finder tools in the past and always had mediocre experiences with them being mostly inaccurate. I remeber when this device 1st came out and it caught my interest, but I did not have a need for it at the time. Recently My wife wanted me to hang some floating shelves near the fireplace. I KNEW I had to get into the Studs directly for a good, sturdy floating shelf that won't SAG over time. This tool allowed me to FLAWLESSLY mount all my shelves without a single missed Stud. So cool !! As a tech guy I understand why it requires calibration, and since it has an App I feel that the user experience can be greatly enhanced !. Each time you take it to the wall you need to do a simple calibration so it learns the surface. It's a big aggrevating when on a ladder and having to use the phone as a view screen, to have to re-calibrate each time it goes back to the same wall. It would be amazing if the App could be updated with a Button to tell the tihng that you are still on the same wall and no need to re-cal. Would be great if you could save wall cal data to like 4 zones, so when doing a full room, you can do initial cal on each wall, then save as wall-1, wall-2, wall-3 wall-4 that way when making repeaded measurements & double checking it would save tremendous amount of time. I fealt pretty dorky in front of my wife, trying to show off my new cool tool when she laughed at me each time I had to re-cal the device. All in all I am glad to have this in my tool kit and I'm sure will get lots more use over the years. Cool product.

Well first, I will say that I do like the Walabot DIY 2 and I have found it to work really well for me. And in my past experiences with anything as expensive as this, I've always found it best to get name brand accessories for it (accessories made by the same company). And so, when I investigated doing that with this device I found that the case for it that's made by Walabot and has their logo on it costs $59.95. Can y'all believe that!? I even started to go through with the purchasing process so I could get the total with shipping. The shipping wound up being $13.99 for me, so the total was going to be $73.94, for just a little zip case big enough to fit a Walabot in!! Hold on though. There's another accessory called the "Walattach - MagSafe Compatible Connector Rings." And all you really get is a round ring magnet and a round ring magnet receptor with sticky backs on them, for... $34.95! And this is so you can put one on the back of your phone or phone case, and put the other on the Walabot so that they can be magnetically connected when you are using them. AND, they even say in the details that, if you already have a case or phone with a magnet on it, that you will only need the magnet receptor. Basically telling you it's going to cost $34.95 just to get one.. little.. flimsy.. magnet.. receptor.. from them... On the bright side though, if you can afford one of these I've found it to work pretty good. I've always had a really hard time finding where studs are in the wall, even while using those stud finders that you slide along the wall that just show a red light when they pass over an obstruction. Well, with this thing I don't just easily find the studs. I can also easily find the CENTER of the studs too. Which eliminates the worry of hitting the edge of a stud instead, which could cause possible problems down the line. So I am plenty happy with my Walabot DIY 2. I just think it should come with a case at the price that it is... And I can't justify paying over $70 just for a case that they claim will be more protective than any other case. Also, just the fact that they are charging so much for a case AND the Walattach things, is proof to me that they are over charging everyone for , well, everything most probably. And that's not cool at all. I almost feel like I should take more than one star off because of that too... But I DID receive what I expected to get and so far, it HAS performed like I expected it to. So I decided to give it a score of 4... out of, 5.

For the price this is a very decent tool. I'm doing a remodel in a 40+ year old condo. This tool has helped me identify where wires and pipes are so I could draw up wiring and plumbing drawings and avoid costly problems and refine my design in terms of moving walls or making openings such as new interior doors. It helps to recalibrate the unit as I move from wall to wall since the type and thickness of my walls vary since there has been previous work done by others, not to mention great variations in the thickness of wall texture and paint. Definitely recommend to anyone doing a major remodel.

I really wanted this to work but sadly it does not. The sales hype for this product made it sound like it would detect items (studs, wires, pipes, etc.) in the wall and then display an image on the screen depicting what item(s) were detected. It also touted the ease of use and the accuracy and laid out lots of 'sales' talking-points that made it sound better than sliced bread. All of these boastful sales talking points are completely false and unfounded. The main problems for me is that for the unit to work it has to be (REQUIRED) connected to the Wi-Fi. What if the house you are working in does not have Wi-Fi or even electricity hooked up? What if the person you are doing the job for doesn't want your device connected to their wi-fi? Beside that the unit has to be calibrated almost every time it is removed from contact with the wall. Calibrating takes a minute or two and wastes a lot of time. It will only work with single-layer new-ish drywall so if the wall you are trying to detect studs in is older or if the walls are a little thicker then you are just out of luck. Conclusion: This Walabot unit is a neat idea IF they ever get one to work like the hype says but in it's current state of development it should not be considered for serious use by either professionals (like by people who do construction work) or even weekend DIYers. It doesn't work well enough to be useful just frustrating. Don't buy one of these.

Returned the walabot as soon as I had a chance to try it. I only gave five stars so the company would not bury my review. The advertising implies that the tool allows you to "see inside your walls'. IT DOES NOT. What it does do is make a CGI after taking one reading and detecting a dense spot in your wall. If the tool waited until you scanned the entire area and then generated an image I would be more impressed... It is just guessing what is in your wall based on common building techniques. I bought the tool to work on New England houses that are often 100 years old or more, these houses have many supports that do not run vertically. Walabot does not combine the data from a thorough scan to show you what is behind the sheetrock. If a support runs horizontally it shows on the screen as a vertical stud every time. The same goes for a support that runs diagonally (when the unit passes over the support the screen shows a vertical stud) I can test for wall density by knocking on the wall, and then guess how the support runs with better accuracy. I was willing to pay the $170 because the tool was going to do more for me than I can already do myself. As for the notion that it can detect mice... I am highly suspicious. I did not have the opportunity to scan a wall with a mouse in it but there must be a set of unmentioned parameters for the wall (basically the mouse would have to be close to the sheetrock) if the house has 6,8, or 10 inch studs and beams I am highly skeptical that it would work. The final straw was their tech support line which is a dead-end. I know when I'm being lied to and the statement that there is support for this product is not accurate.

Works okay. Personally, it’s not worth the money. I have found cheaper options that do just as well, or better, for me. Specifically, I need to identify where two or more studs are sistered together. The Walabot can identify studs, however they show up individually on screen so it’s difficult to identify as to whether, or not, they are actually sistered. I tested the Walabot on a drywalled wall that was open (no drywall) on the opposite side. My $40 dollar, 13 sensor stud finder was hands down better at identifying sistered wood material. Additionally, the Walabot was hit and miss when identifying electrical wires. Again, on the same wall where I can physically see from the opposite, open side the electrical wires, the Walabot had a difficult time picking them up even though I knew EXACTLY where those wires were. Some people may find the technology fun and all, but as a professional who uses stud finders regularly, it’s not for me.

Accurately located joist,Studs etc great for diy-er & professional at first i thought it only worked if you have access to wi-fi, infact it has buiilt in wi-fi so is good for the onsite professional as well a great product although a bit stingy not to include the magnetic ring attachment so you can mount your phone on top of the device. You can purchase this separately on line ! It is pricey but if your cutting into ceilings and walls all day its worth its weight in gold !!

It's ambiguous what is in the wall. Works well in some cases, but sometimes misleading

It didn't work at first, it was disconnecting a lot. We've thought about returning it. But decided to give it a try on a different phone and it worked. It was the phone that wasn't compatible with the app, my husband phone is an older phone (Huawei Pro 20) and it didn't work on that one. We have installed on my phone (Samsung S23 Ultra) and it worked very well. We could see the stilts (wood, metal), wires, pipes in the wall. It's a vey useful product for your DIY projects around the house and even for the professional use. It's a bit expensive, but it's worthing. Definitely a good buy. It's just not compatible with every phone. If It’s not working for you, try install it on a different phone.
