Inspired by an actual incident, this unassuming, wonderfully good-natured romantic comedy tells the story of a New York City street cop named Charlie (Nicolas Cage) who makes a promise to a coffee-shop waitress named Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) that will change both their lives. One day after coffee, Charlie is embarrassed to discover he doesn't have money for a tip, so he tells Yvonne that he'll share half of his winnings if the lottery ticket he's holding comes up a winner. Sure enough, he wins the jackpot--a whopping $4 million payoff--and Charlie's wife, Muriel (Rosie Perez), goes ballistic when he tells her about his deal with Yvonne. From this point, It Could Happen to You follows Charlie's dilemma as he is forced to decide the proper course of action, and director Andrew Bergman smoothly incorporates a gentle love story into this amusing crisis of conscience. Fonda and Cage have an easygoing chemistry that adds a pleasant touch to the movie's fairy-tale plot, and the story's kindhearted sentiment is never so thick that it becomes sticky-sweet or artificial. As feel-good comedies go, this one's a class act. --Jeff Shannon An irrepressible romantic comedy about a humble cop who leaves a two million dollar tip to a hard-luck waitress. I'll Second the Accolades
My doctor recommended lots of happy movies; this one felt uplifting, so, although the info blurb made it seem a bit too fluffy, I trusted the quality of the two main actors, Bridget Fonda, and Nicholas Cage. However, though they served their roles pretty well, it was all the so called "secondary" actors who made the film a fulfilling one. Yes, the story opens with Cage and his co-cop buddy starting to have breakfast in the restaurant where Bridget works. Almost immediately they are called out on a case, Cage finding he barely had enough cash to pay the tab, much less a tip, so he looks at what's in his wallet, and, out of what sense of adventure, he offers her a double tip or half of his lottery winnings. That same sense of adventure and fun would lead me, too, to answer for the lottery, wouldn't it you? A regular tip, doubled, is not as interesting as a surprise, even if it's not much, is worth the fun of the anticipation. Meanwhile, we are exposed to each of their domestic partners and their almost revoltingly unfit domestic scenes. She had a slick, double talking husband who ran up their credit card, and disappeared. He, Cage, has a complaining, unsatisfied, nagging, disappointed wife who wants to get out of a blue collar existence (she herself seems to be the proprietor of a nail salon), and sees happiness as something not inside yourself, but in trying to make over everything you look at, drink, eat and wear as the key to arriving socially and to true fulfillment. This is the crux of the whole film, I think. Relationships of mutual trust, caring, and support make us human, interactive with real life values every day, and what really make us alive and happy; and yes, accomplishment without being attached too much to the outcome is good, too. So, Cage telephones on his wife's lottery ticket, finding out that many other people had this same winning number including a bowling team of 9, so the $64 million is down to $4 million for their take. What ensues is the exposition of wife-y and hubby's value systems, at nearly polar opposites: she wants money as the ticket OUT, alluded to above, and he is focussed on using his skills for helping people; money doesn't mean that much except that sometimes it can facilitate that help. He does some kindness with part of the winnings, including a season ticket to the professional baseball games for his buddy, taking the local kids to the stadium for the day, and of course, giving the waitress her share. (She does something wonderful with her sum - buys her old restaurant ,not only remodeling, but setting up a "Free Meal" table for those who are hungry but cannot afford to buy in tribute to her benefactor the cop.) These scenes are happy and go smoothly, but meanwhile, the wife is getting angrier, seeing hubby as a barrier to her happiness, and, after throwing all his stuff out of the apartment (including his favorite chair) , starting an expensive remodel, and attending a millionaire's banquet on board a ship, meets an "investor" who wants to help her make even more money. You're still high from all the fun and surprises, and then a really unpleasant one occurs: wife-y has asked for a divorce, wanting not only ALL the material goods, and her half of the lottery money, but ALL of the lottery winnings, including the two million hubby gave to waitress. You sit there thinking "Can she really be that fearful, greedy and vindictive?" Yes! She can! You can see her point of view somewhat, although I thought all income in a marriage was considered owned by both partners, but there is no compromise, and the jury in the court case votes in her favor. Those who truly won were those who understood where happiness begins and ends - inside oneself- and those who lost, were those who found so little acceptance of themselves they had to get it from "stuff." So, one of waitress' regular homeless diners was really an underground news investigator who was following Cop and Waitress' story and selling pics to the newspaper. It was delightful to see so many people following their story with keen interest; so when they get into trouble, guess what? People loved sharing their story, and thousands sent in small checks for them to recoup their dream, or just to help out, and it ended with the Cop and Waitress sailing away in a hot air balloon, dumping out thousands of pink hearts of gratitude into the breeze, and blue, blue sky. I'm still smiling. (Wait 'til you see what happened to wife-y: seemed very fitting somehow.)

Super Fun 90s Glassic!
If you want a fun movie that is clean entertainment, get this movie, popcorn and a drink and be prepared to giggle at the 90s and the funny lines. You'll recognize faces and wonder, "What has that actor been up to?" I don't want to mention the plot because this will be a new movie for many and I don't want to spoil it. You absolutely cannot go wrong with Nick Cage, Rosie Perez, Brigette Fonda, Wendell Price, Isaac Hayes, Stanley Tucci and even Red Buttons: an old timey actor/comedian. The soundtrack is classic 90s movie soundtrack (not 90s music, 90s MOVIE soundtrack. You'll see what I mean when you watch it) Do get it. It is fun, funny and everyone looks super young and fab!
