How many personal messages can you record?

One at a time. You can record over the messages. We had one of these a few years ago and it was wonderful. The last one I purchased the volume was not good. If you get one like our first phone it was great and the kids loved it. If they are all like the last one I purchased I would not buy it again.

Can this hold up to some drool? What kind of batteries does it take?

Hi Melanie, The volume is set to a level that is perfect for tiny ears (and also just right for grown-up ears). For now, there's no way to adjust it yourself on this toy. We hope this helps! - Team B.

How do you lock it after you record a message so it doesn't get erased?

I do not think you can lock in a recorded message with this phone.
