Synology 2-Bay DiskStation DS723+ (Diskless)

We have a small office setup. About 10 computers, two network printers, about 10 mobile phones and 5 remote pc connections. Main use was for file sharing and remote file sharing via VPN. We had an I9 Windows Server 2019 Machine set up which worked well when it did. It encountered a "trust" issue so connectiond to server were refused (the solution is to remove each device from the domain, then rejoin but for the numbet of devices we had that was very time consuming) So i took a flyer with this. Bought 32 gb of sodimm ddr 4 (do a google search to see working options which are not manufacturer listed) and also synologys 400 gh nvme. Installed two WD red 4TB in Raid 1. Once everything was setup this worked very fast and was easy to setup. The transfer speeds exceeded what we had before. Remote connection was also very reliable (using static ip and port forwarding on router) and i was able to map drives in Windows as network locations. I have had to use the external drive as well. First on the initial setup to transfer about 500gb of files to the NAS and also recently to trsnsfer 100gb of files from the NAS. Took just about an hour for the first and about 20 minutes for the second. The only thing i havent figured out as yet is syncing to dropbox as a backup option.

I fully went Synology building this out: ram, m.2 and hdd’s. I wish I’d known about SpaceRex’s expertise and went for a 4 or 5 bay (923+ or 15xx+) model at the time, but I didn’t know how I would grow after maturing a bit. I put all 35,000 pieces of music, all my work, all my backups, all my OpenFOAM/MatLab files, all my scanned this-and-that, and use Container Manager all the time as well as so much more. I’m ready for a 4-5 bay, and would prefer to go all-Synology HDD, RAM and M.2 but the cost-differential is insane. I love Hyper Backup, Active Backup 4 Biz (AB4B) and all the apps that watch over the system which is quite busy. I wish Time Machine was better integrated than it is. My Time Machine volume on the 723+ is pretty “dumb”. It’s only storage which has meager Synology tweak-ability. I just use a volume but unlike true Synology stuff, no version control and minimal scheduling. The original publicized “hack” into the MacOS that was supposed to work didn’t, and was a bit scary, but I was able to back out. Please Apple! Figure it out! Integrate TM with Synology! Backing up the 723+ is sweet. I love using Hyper Backup to back up the 723+ to my Seagate Expansion disk. It works perfectly. I can check to see if the files are accessible through H-B Explorer to verify the files, and that change version control is fulfilled. Similarly, so does AB4B for my Windows machine backup volume. I can verify all the backups easily. I am this close to moving up to a 4-5 bay Synology even if just for DSM and the Synology eco-system’s reliability. But using WD-Red drives and third party M.2 and RAM sticks. I just wish I could future-proof as my 723+ is only a few years old.

So right now I have this basically hosting photos, chat, videos, powerpoints, for a small school of 70 ish students. Ive not had a single issue. In fact when I did misplace some screws, I called up Synology and they just shipped me new ones totally free of charge- which is cool in today's world. Everything about this is very user friendly and anything you don't know is only a quick reddit post or YouTube video away. Highly recommend for small companies and families who need storage and a networked solution to get things when away from home

This NAS is so much faster than my old DS712+ it's amazing. I am impressed !

Have you ever bought something that just works, like the old term, runs like an appliance? Synology is one of those items. easy to run, easy to configure and better yet easy to keep using as the years roll on. My second unit in 10 years just because it feels good to upgrade when the first edition worked so damn well. Remember when HP and the that other disk drive company made servers? Ha, can't even remember how many HD's failed in the Drobo due to heat soak. Synology just works. Rare these days.

Setup has been challenging, and due to either my ISP and/or routers my ISP uses, setting up a VPN (which I had hoped to do) has proven difficult and possibly beyond my sole capabilities. Some aspects of setting this up may test the upper limits of tech amateurs (like me). However I'm updating a previously frustrated of this item to positive for now.

Love how easy it is to configure other than a slight issue using the quick connect id setup from the device interface instead of from the website - maybe because of my subnet configuration but the quick connect has no issue connecting through the network topology without configuring port forwarding so that’s nice. Uses btrfs, I mean it’s not the worst structure and not the fastest but it’s definitely the best pick for ease of setup and data integrity though zfs does have the advantage in terms of integrity but the nas has a data scrub that will do the data repairs for you which you can schedule… I think for my small scale setup it fits perfectly because I don’t want to do a mess of configuration and maintenance - but I love the convenience of the thing and interoperability between my lan operating systems for file sharing it just works and that’s a thing of beauty… configure permissions or setup sso I’ve just been using user ids and Authenticator app without passwords because passwords make me crazy. And the default password requirements are a little silly but they can be changed or disabled entirely which they don’t recommend but I guess we’ll see how it goes - love the app support and installation / updates are easy it’s a solid little device with room to expand.. very nice product definitely recommend if you’re thinking you need a nas

I have been using Synology NAS units for over 10 years, and this is the first time where I am actually encountering issues and having to deal with very poor customer support from Synology. The fan of the unit is SUPER LOUD: to the point where you cannot keep the unit in an area where people spend time. The way Synology provides support leaves a lot of be desired: you have to go through 12365 steps (including: lots of troubleshooting that you have to do yourself, fan replacement, unit replacement, etc.). I've had the unit replaced and the second one is even louder and the customer service is again useless. Why put such a cheap loud fan inside of the unit!?!?!? Super disappointing experience, and will certainly not get a Synology NAS the next time around.

I have been using Synology NAS for quite a few years now so will be a bit biased as I think they are great for business purposes, they also have a lot of business applications that can really help small and large businesses a like. They require very little maintenance and are easy to set up. I also mess about with full blown windows servers in the way of Dell power edge systems and at the end of the day it is horses for courses. The Dell server is great for what we use it for. the Synology provides us with a simple solution to some activities that we did not want to hoist on the windows server.

Delivered ahead of schedule and the price was really good. Synology is widely reviewed so nothing much I can say here.
