Is the "wadding" supposed to be used as 1 piece or do you pull it apart?

Would this mark walls/paint work when polishing sockets and switches?

Yes it can do, so get a piece of cardboard cut a hole out of it the size of your plug sockets /switches but have enough on the outsides to help prevent polish getting on your walls etc. And you can use them more than once. Good luck.
