The dimmer dial continues past 0% brightness for quite a ways. Is this normal? It seems 0% starts in the center of the dimmer wheel's range of motion.

It's not a problem. It's just the way they wrote the code. I set it for the brightness I want at night, then put a small piece of tape over the dial, otherwise I constantly change it every time I touch the clock. I wish the clock did an auto dim.

Is it a 3 prong plug or does it have 2 progs ?

2 prongs. Assuming you mean non-grounded plug.

When the alarm setting is off, can you stop the display on front of clock from saying "OFF"?

I went through the entire little manual and there is no way to turn off the "OFF" display.

does this have variable sounds what is the alarm like?

Sorry I don't know about the alarm sound. I don't use the alarm. This is because the alarm on/off button is located on the back of the clock and is hard to find. Poor design for alarm use. The clock has a unique shape and 100% dimmable display. Those two features were good enough to keep the clock. For me, it's a unique clock but not an alarm clock.
