no it is not, save your money and buy a different plane this thing is a complete pile of crap the sole looks to have been surfaced behind a car at 60 mph on asphalt, they used a dull beaver to grind the blade crooked i might ad. it really is a piece of crap maybe check out tay tools or bite the bullet and buy a wood river or veritas or something else, anything else.

Is this good for flattening wood for jointery and squaring off engrain?

This plane will flatten, square, thickness plane and smooth. Many wood workers use a jack plane instead of a smoother. This of course depends on how well the plane has been prepared i.e. Flattened sole, Sharpened Blade with the back side of the blade flattened, all mating parts are flat and the chip breaker must sit flat on the blade.
