Is this a transformer or a converter? I have a 110 v sewing machine with a warning not to plug into 220 socket. So I need a transformer.

This electronic device (called a voltage converter) is not a transformer*; however, I think it will operate your sewing machine provided the sewing machine can be plugged into a standard 120 VAC receptacle and does not exceed 2300 Watts. A transformer will also work if you can find one and will be more robust. The sewing machine should work with either 50 Hz or 60 Hz. I purchased this converter for travel to UK (I live in the US) but only used to charge my phone. It should be capable of powering a 120V hairdryer up to 2300W. It is light and compact. *My old school definition of an electrical transformer is a simple heavy, bulky magnetic device with a iron core and two electrical windings, primary and a secondary, which converts AC Voltage up or down: 120 to 240 or in your case 240 to 120. On a mission to Zimbabwe in 1998 our team purchased a transformer 240 to 120 VAC to run a circular saw we brought with us.
