my husband runs marathons and needs something to keep him warm at the end was looking into dry robes. is this the same kind of thing?

Yes, has most of the Dri-robe features plus a few more like additional pockets and comes with carrying bag which doubles as a changing mat at better price. My daughter has a Dri-robe for open water swimming, we brought two of these for camping trips great for chilly evenings and early showers. Excellent value definitely recommend.

Would a child’s larger size fit as I’m a size 8 and only 5 ft tall?

I am size 8 /10 and 5ft 2. I find the s/m perfect. I would guess that it would be good for you too as I find that I do need some additional room to use it as an effective changing robe. I would think the child’s size may not provide that.
