The original uncut version of director Tobe Hooper's blood-splattering classic, based on the true-life exploits of serial killer Ed Gein. A group of five teenagers drive down to Texas to check that their grandfather's grave is intact and stumble upon a farmhouse inhabited by a family of unemployed slaughterhouse workers, including the grisly 'Leatherface' (Gunnar Hansen), who wears a mask made of human flesh and wields a fearsome chainsaw. Review: good horror movie - I recommend it, its more realistic than most horror films even though made in the 1970s Review: Great Horror/Gore Classic!!! - One of the best classic horror/gore films ever made in my opinion. The lower budget way it is filmed gives it it's own creepiness as well.

Disturbing - that's the word we're looking for.
While it is probably true that TCM is past its sell-by date when compared with what we are watching 40 years later in terms of ‘horror’ films, it remains a seminal piece of work. I placed the word ‘horror’ in inverted commas there because the term has always been dubious and now has opened out to encompass a variety of sub-genres from the ghost story to full-on Japanese extremism. It is not easy therefore to place TCM into a suitable category but if I were to attempt that, ‘Disturbing’ would be that category. The film will undoubtedly be a disappointment to those expecting to experience the delights of seeing victims being cut to pieces with a chainsaw – the title is misleading in this respect – because buckets of blood are not forthcoming. Hence I imagine, the number of one star reviews. We do need to place the film in context. Firstly, its age would limit the amount of explicit violence which one might expect to see and secondly director Tobe Hooper was well aware of the effect of leaving that level of violence off screen. But even that is rather missing the point. Hooper’s intent was to engineer an experience of abject terror. Whether that works depends entirely on your sensibilities of course, but back in the day I suspect that it had a devastating effect on cinema audiences. Real fear and terror are not emotions which most of us have experienced first hand but it is likely that we have experienced them in our nightmares and that is what successful films of the ‘horror’ genre should tap into in order to realize such emotions. A cinematic recreation of such nightmares is therefore the closest that film can bring us to that experience but the majority of attempts at this are unsuccessful. TCM does at least partly succeed on this level and it connects with the subconscious because Hooper understands what nightmares are made of. And the production design is pretty disturbing too. There is a lot of very dark humour and even more screaming from lead Marilyn Burns which I must admit had a negative effect on me. I’d personally view TCM as an interesting piece of film making (especially for up and coming horror directors), and one which should be respected for what it is without making comparisons.

Bought this under the premise of it been the full uncut film with a run time of 1 hour and 23 minutes as it says in the description and on the DVD case, however this isn't the case with a run time of a little over 1 hour and 19 minutes instead, disappointed to day the least

Hooper's Horror Masterpiece
Probabilmente l'apice nella filmografia di Tobe Hooper. Niente a che vedere con i remake successivi. Questo è una spanna sopra. Disturbante e terrificante. Un capolavoro. Versione dvd scarsa, solo in lingua originale e senza sottotitoli. Ma è la versione uncut. Tempi di consegna Amazon ottimi come sempre.
