Joseph Campbell, arguably the greatest mythologist of the twentieth century, was certainly one of our greatest storytellers. This masterfully crafted book interweaves conversations between Campbell and some of the people he inspired, including poet Robert Bly, anthropologist Angeles Arrien, filmmaker David Kennard, Doors drummer John Densmore, psychiatric pioneer Stanislov Grof, Nobel laureate Roger Guillemen, and others. Campbell reflects on subjects ranging from the origins and functions of myth, the role of the artist, and the need for ritual to the ordeals of love and romance. With poetry and humor, Campbell recounts his own quest and conveys the excitement of his lifelong exploration of our mythic traditions, what he called "the one great story of mankind." Review: Book - A great read Review: I bought this for insight… ended up planning my own epic quest. - Joseph Campbell doesn’t just explain mythology — he unpacks the entire blueprint of existence. Reading this book felt like being guided through life by a wise grandad who’s read every myth, watched every film, and still knows how to make it relevant to your dating life, career change, or existential crisis. I came for some creative inspiration… and now I’m questioning everything from Star Wars to my morning routine. Apparently, I am the hero — I just haven’t answered the call yet (but I’m thinking about it). Warning: side effects may include over-identifying with Frodo, spontaneous self-reflection, and a strange urge to follow talking animals. Highly recommended for anyone on a path — literal or metaphorical — and especially for those who love storytelling, psychology, or pretending their flatshare drama is part of a larger mythic arc.

Brilliant
Joseph Campbell has the human condition well understood. An inspiring read. Both frightening and reassuring. Every politician ought to read this.

The Master speaks....
This is my third purchase of this book.. I have worn both the previous ones out, this of itself shows how often I have read and read his words. He has kept my sense of wonder alive for so many years and I can still find something I missed in earlier readings. Mystical, Magical, Mind opening and revealing. If you have not read it....do so, if you have read it.... read it again... and again.

Enjoyed this
Very thought-provoking and entertaining sideways angle on Campbell's work that illuminates further his previous work and develops further understanding of it. Some books in this collection have rehashed too much the previous books, but this one feels fresher and is definitely worth the read.

Difficult
I believe that the content is good, but for a non native speaker it is difficult to read and understand.

So glad I found Jo.
Wow. Just wow. I wish I had read this in my 20's. It would have saved me years of stumbling around in the religious dark seeking an answer. This book has confirmed for me everything I have come to understand from all my years of investigating different spiritual and religious dogmas and opened the door to clarity. What an amazing man he was. Mr Joseph Campbell how I wish I had been privileged to listen to one of your lectures. Never mind. I have access to your books!😀

Wow
Joseph Campbell wasn't just a writer, he's a legend. His influence on the study of mythology and storytelling remains profound, and his ideas continue to shape fields like literature, film studies, and psychology. If you haven't read his works, I suggest you start today.
