will these work on 16 AWG?

I only run 12 ga. wire, however I think they will as 16 ga. is much smaller diameter. The issue with the 12 ga. is that this item was improperly designed to accommodate this larger diameter wire.

Could these be used to splice 12 awg to 12 awg, or is the smaller end meant only for smaller gauge fixture wire like 16 or 18?
