MG10XU 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Effects

Purchased as an at home or event option to mix a podcast when we can’t make it to the studio. I’d consider myself a novice when it comes to gear, and just a little picky when it comes to quality, just so you know the angle I’m approaching this with. Here were some highlights for me: - With the right mics in the right space, the quality of audio and control we get with this little guy was surprisingly good. - Really sturdy, and fairly compact for what you get. - simple to set up with Adobe Audition to record - I get really level recordings with minimal tweaking to the settings. Its easier to match my low volume speakers with high volume speakers compared to some more expensive/complex mixers I’ve used. - I don’t use the effects much. While they are fun to play with, I’ll note they’re a little tedious to change on the fly, but you can only expect so much for how compact they are here. I love the texture the “phone call” effects add. If anyone ever does a bit where someone is playing a call-in guest, it sounds great. - Doesn’t record individual tracks, so test those levels before you record and be wary of speakers who drift from the mic. - While you cant split and control levels of several sets of headphones with just the mixer, you can get three pairs of headphones to work if you don't mind using the left out, right out, and stereo outputs all at once. Suitable option for less picky podcast hosts. - I’ve seen some reviews where people mention the mixer getting hot. I haven't experienced this yet, and I’ve used this mixer for almost a year. It was accidentally left on for about 4 hours after recording once and still didn't feel surprisingly warm to the touch. My round-up: for a non-gear-head podcaster, this mixer provided the right balance of ease of use, quality, and price for my needs.

I looked at buying a few different mixers before deciding on this one. I was looking for something that was reliable sounded great, and had a good feature set. This mixer is great for a few reasons 1) It's yamaha. They are generally pretty reliable. I own other yamaha music equipment and haven't had any issues with any of those items 2) Has good fx including a compressor. The mic compressor alone makes this product so much better then other mixers in terms of versatility. For recording its nice to have a little compression for the vocal before it hits the AD converter. 3) You can use this as an interface. I can't comment on its use as a an interface as I own a universal audio solo 610 interface that I love. But its a good feature to have. 4) The reverb: sounds wonderful. Particularly room 1, fx 3. It helps to glue everything together and put it in the same space. 5) The use the fx send and it has been great for a ton of uses. I use it mostly as an external bus. Whats great here is that you can use the internal effect like say a reverb and mix in a little. You can simultaneously use the fx send and send out to a delay unit, and then place the return on another channel. Other units its fx send or internal fx, you won't be able to use both. 6) Feels sturdy and seems well built. So far i've had it on well over 20 hours of use and its been good. I'll update this in a few months. 7) Value. For the money if you compare the comparable mixers like behringer and mackie I think the choice is clear. Both of the former companies have reliability issues. Mackie preamps are good but fx are bad. Behringer preamps are hit and miss but fx are good. Yamaha is overall great. Cons: For me nothing really except I wish the EQ had three bands for every channel. And I wish I could have an fx send that wasn't tied to the internal fx.

It all started when I wanted to get a nice microphone for my PC. I chose an AT2020. I needed some device to power my mic and provide a USB interface to my computer. I did a bit of research and it looks like you have to spend a good chunk of change to interface your XLR microphone with a PC, in the range of $70-$120 for a basic unit. So in comes this device. It powers 4 XLR mics and the device becomes a microphone device on your Windows PC automatically with no install necessary. I also have a piano keyboard plugged into one of the inputs (a left and right channel), and an echo dot into the one mono input. I've had to purchase a 3.5 audio male to 1/4 audio male cord for connecting the echo dot to the mixer. I use this setup for working from home but also for gaming. The 24 sound effects are actually total gravy for me but a super nice perk. Best of all the interface is extremely intuitive even though I knew NOTHING. It just took a bit of tweaking around and everything started to make sense. The way you can apply sound effects to individual channels and completely control the amount is pure genius. All the controls feel solid, the device itself is beautiful, the sound quality is top notch. I can't believe they make these things for so little money! The thing does get hot at the back. It's got amplifying parts and fancy circuitry! I'm not sure about this but I presume that keeping your unused channels level & gain at 0 reduces electric use / heat... somebody enlighten me!

This mixer sounds pretty good, works seamlessly as a class-compliant device with the Mac (OS 10.9 tested). It needs no drivers to work at sample rates from 44.1KHz-192KHz, and works with everything I've tested, including ProTools 10 and 11. One of my goals in buying this was to have an inexpensive 192K (or, more importantly for me, 176.4K) interface so that I could at least open high-sample rate ProTools sessions for non-critical-listening work in various locations outside the studio where my "good" 192K-capable equipment is. For this, the MG10XU is perfect, and its actually nice to have the mixer's output section controls, which are better than the typical small inexpensive interface, and multiple outputs. There is one (to me) strange quirk in this mixer, which I find a little detrimental to playback, and may be a big issue for any recording done through this device. Basically, where I'm used to "Monitor/Phones" level control to come after (that is, be influenced by) the Stereo level control, in this mixer, they are completely independent. Further, the level sent to the computer via USB is not affected by either the Stereo level or Monitor/Phones level... and there's no control for changing the signal source for the meter (which always shows the stereo bus AFTER the stereo level control). So... there's no way to adjust the level of what's being recorded that preserves the mix, and no way to meter the signal sent to the converters. A glance at the block diagram makes all this clear if you're looking for it. Of course, one can (and should) monitor post-USB levels in the DAW. But I like to have the pre conversion analog information as well, and also to be able to have the device I'm twiddling be able to meter the effect of that twiddling. I'm not sure if I'll ever use this mixer to record anything that needs live adjustments of level or mix, so I'm not particularly concerned about the lack of ability to adjust the level of the whole mix before being sent to USB... but I would be if this was primarily a recording device. By "concerned" I don't mean it would necessarily be a deal breaker - but it would be something I'd want to investigate thoroughly before choosing this mixer. So, overall, a great device for the price for my purposes!

This Yamaha mixer is a perfect example of a “buy once, cry once” product. I had tried a cheaper budget mixer first with very little success, and replacing it with the MG10XU made a huge difference. It is not cheap, but the sound quality and extremely low noise level are amazing. The effects work great, and the dedicated 24-bit USB connection sounds excellent with my iPad feeding music into the mixer. Everything sounds cleaner, fuller, and more professional. The mixer also feels very solid and well-built. It has some weight to it, the controls feel good, and the entire unit gives the impression that it was built to last. It runs quietly and does exactly what I need it to do. My only small complaint is that I wish the USB input had a midrange adjustment knob like some of the other channels. I understand why Yamaha designed it this way, but having that extra adjustment would make an already excellent mixer even better. I have been so impressed with the MG10XU that I decided to stay with Yamaha for the rest of my sound system and purchased their subwoofer and powered speakers as well. I cannot say enough good things about the quality and performance of this mixer.

First of all, let me tell you I have used other mixers in the past from a lot of brands. Behringer, Mackie, Soundcraft, Allen & Heath. This mixer gives you the best bang for your buck. The preamps sound good and the compressors on the first two channels are usable, especially for beginners who don't know how to setup a compressor. I would just love to have the compressor on all 4 mic preamps. The EQ is OK , the only down side would be that there is no sweepable mid range. You only get fixed Frequencies for High Mid and Low (10kz , 2.5kzh , 100hz) You get two set of outputs (Main and Monitor) each with its own individual volume control, which is very nice for having two set of speakers or you can use the monitor volume to control your headphone volume. The fx on this mixer are great, and it only has what you need. Most mixers have a TON of Fx that you hardly ever use, but this one hast 24 fx. At thi end you'll end up using 1 or 2 of the fx. Now for the best part. It has an integrated sound card in it. You hook it up via USB and you can record in to your computer or Mobile device and monitor what you have recorded back trough the mixer. Theres and app that lets you use your tablet or phone to record directly into it. The app in itself its not that great, but you can use your computer with your DAW of choice and it will work very nice. The mixer its just the right size. It doesn't get in the way and its portable if you want to take it on the field. Five stars for Yamaha and this amazing mixer

This thing is Industry standard ready and good as it gets far as im concerned. Mixes perfect with any proper gear I've thrown at it and records on cubase perfectly which is just as great of a program and all you really need for a DAW, and it comes with that too if you dont have it already. You really should. Make the right choice. It's also completly gig proof, delivery driver proof, and idiot proof, so it survives my daily use. So is Cusbase. Oh and it gets hot, because it's suppsed to, not burning hot indoors at 25c, but it's working good as it's overdriven preamps design were intended. It's yamaha, it works fine. It don't break. M audio, behringer, things like that, broken, don't even have industry standard sound processors or hardware, just fine china. When you do sort through all the company propaganda and ads, youll find their top tier actual industry standart gear is like the same price or even more than, actual industry standard gear. Get an Art tube basic tube amp, some Shure sm57 or 58 if you have too, and some instruments, pedals, proper gain and preamps, soundsystem style, outboard gear. Analog. Mix and master in Cuebase intuitively, actually finish a project, and tools to polish it up if needed. The original one I sold after 10 years use was still in perfect condition. This model I prefer and would recommend. The Cubase v4 that came with it is still running my projects and samples etc on an old IBM and integrates with all the new stuff as well. Keep it up Yamaha. The best. I got on a ton of other sequencers DAW and what not and found the workflow completely inferior, counterproductive to put it nicely. Stop fiddling around with crap and get your music done right fellas. Enjoy. Free and goot VST's VST3 now I suppose and all sorts of good helpers on cuebase if you find the right bunch.
