Is the roller stainless steel ?

Tim, I kind of doubt it. It is from China and the roller is magnetic but, without a material analysis I don't know what it's made from. It does, for what it is, work well and has been very helpful in the shop.

is the roller supported by a ball bearing?

It doesn't feel like it has bearings but it rotates freely. The unit has worked well for me when positioning long boards into a chop saw.
