The beloved bestseller from Newbery Medalist and National Book Award winner Louis Sachar ( Holes ), with a brand-new cover! “Give me a dollar or I’ll spit on you.” That’s Bradley Chalkers for you. He’s the oldest kid in the fifth grade. He tells enormous lies. He picks fights with girls, and the teachers say he has serious behavior problems. No one likes him—except Carla, the new school counselor. She thinks Bradley is sensitive and generous, and she even enjoys his far-fetched stories. Carla knows that Bradley could change, if only he weren’t afraid to try. But when you feel like the most hated kid in the whole school, believing in yourself can be the hardest thing in the world. . . . Review: She would read for an hour each day and it quickly became my favorite part of the school day - This book was read to me when I was in second grade. That was in 1993. I remember our teacher said we could lay our heads down on our desk and either have a short nap or listen to this story for an hour. She would read for an hour each day and it quickly became my favorite part of the school day. I could never nap because I just had to know what happened next in Bradley Chalkers story. It was uplifting and inspiring to listen to the triumphant story of a 5th grade boy who struggled in school to be liked and to beleive in himself. Now 22 years later I have a little boy in 1st grade and he has come to enjoy chapter books and I knew this would be one of the books I had to read to my children. This book is especially suitable for my little boy as he has ADHD and is struggling a bit in school this year. He isn't overtly mean like Bradly is in the beginning of the story but he too has some behavior struggles and finds it a bit difficult to beleive in himself at times. Its a great opportunity to be able to spend some time together and watch him put himself in Bradly's shoes. It's been fun to see how intuitive and bright my little boy is as we read this together and he shares his insights with me. I'm grateful my second grade teacher read this to our class in 1993 and that I can now read this to my own children in 2015. I have found that it is just as relevant today as it was back then. Review: It keeps you interested! - My son just moved to the 3rd grade, and this was on the list for his summer reading. I didn't read what it was; I just searched on desertcart, saw the stars, and bought it. We just finished chapter 28, halfway through, and I can't wait to finish it. 😆 It is very well written, and the first-person dialogue makes it very entertaining. My son said right on the very first day of reading, "Oh boy, I'm glad we got this book!" It's just that good; it keeps you engaged and involved. Good stuff. We are very happy we got this book 📖 😀

Great book!
I have read this book before and it is a fantastic book. I’ve really been trying to get my hands on it but buy from somewhere else. Amazon has said this would come overnight and then updates the shipping status every day extending arrival. They’ve gotten pretty good at this shady business. The book is a really good story and very entertaining. I’d recommend buying the book but not from this shipper.

Masterful, Touching, Hilarious Storytelling
This book should be read by child psychologists everywhere! It truly captures the essence of being a troubled kid who wants to be loved. Engaging, hilarious, and touching, this novel is one of the greats. I'd strongly recommend it to any reader of any age!

Great read!
This is a great book. My 10 year old son read it aloud to me/with me. Bradley is a very realistic character. At first he doesn’t seem very lovable, but you will grow to love him and appreciate him. You may even feel sorry for him. As the book progresses, the reader learns about how Bradley grows as a person. The ending is sweet. My son was sad that the book ended. This is the first chapter book that was son ever said he “loved”. Give it a try!

What a touching and sincere story.
This is one of my favorite books of all time, and I am not a kid! The author wrote with such sincerity and such deep understanding. At first, Bradley is a horrible, bratty child. After seeing what his family life is like, and how he is treated at school, you learn that he is just a person with problems like anyone else. This book is so great because although Bradley has problems in life, he is not portrayed as completely innocent by any means. He is a real person who both reacts to problems and lashes out creating more of them for himself. This book will teach children how to overcome obstacles and how to look for the good in others. I am a counselor, and my 4th and 5th grade campers always LOVE this book. If you like books about people who work hard to overcome personal challenges, this is the one for you! This beautifully written story is sincerely touching.

Witzig!
Lesenswert!

a fun story with a surprisingly meaningful heart
Çok komik! İlk tepkim bu olsa da bu kitap, küçük çocukların karşılaştığı bazı korkulara ve reddedilme korkusunun ya da başarılı olma korkusunun üstesinden nasıl gelineceğine değinen harika bir kitap.
