Will it show a river channel?

No. The etrex h has no onboard maps. All it does is record where you have been, your current location, your current heading, and sunrise / sunset schedules.It can also help with navigation by giving distance and bearing to a known location.

I see that the map scale with the walking figure is 500 feet. Can I adjust that down to say 100 feet?

Yes, you can do it, check the manual, I don,t remember right now , how to do it, but sure you can do it.

Does the GARMIN PC Interface Cable - RS232 Serial Port Connector come with the unit or do I have to buy that separate?

Need to buy separately. I'm not sure whether it's available from Farmin as this model GPS is discontinued. Even if it is you can probably find it at a lower price by doing an Internet search for it b
