The Complete James Herriot

Good books , can recommend.

As a fan of the TV series All Creatures Great and Small I thought I'd get the books by James Herriot to see how they compared. To my delight they were better and even more entertaining. Every chapter is a story in itself and to follow his busy and highly varied career is what I can only describe as a truly heart-warming experience. The books also give a wonderful insight into what rural life was like in the 1930's and 40's and there are plenty of laughs along the way. I thoroughly recommend these books to anyone who has an interest in that era, loves animals, or simply enjoys a damn good read.

As I have been having a very difficult time just lately, (I have bad depression with anxiety - but am being treated), that I felt that an absorbing read might help, and then I remembered James Herriot. I had read some of his books, many years ago, and when the thought came back into my mind - and I found the listing for the set of 8 books, I immediately ordered it, and I am so glad that I did!! Right, from the very first pages, James painted such wonderful thoughtful pictures, of firstly Yorkshire, and the landscapes of the fells and farms, then of the Farmers and their Families, together with the antics of the animals, that I was almost there with him. The many amusing and distracting stories, of his 'trials' and 'tribulations', in the beautiful surroundings - with cold winds and even colder cobbles - immediately took me away. I could hear the sheep and the cows and pigs, and taste the fantastic food that he was given, that I was just sitting there with him, and enjoying all those wonderful tastes. His love of his life, of his job, his wife and children, his pets,and his partner - Siegfried and Tristan, is all so plain to see, that I could really feel it through his words. His sheer delight at managing to deliver new lambs,calves, and piglets was so infectious, that you didn't notice all the 'not so appealing results', as he looks in complete wonder at all of the new little ones he has helped into the world. His sheer Joy' is totally enclosing, and has helped me through many 'not so happy hours'. I would certainly recommend, everyone to read these books, if like me, - you are having difficult times, or if you need a lot Peace,Joy, and above all 'a Little Love in your life', you will find it all in the company of the 'Yorkshire Vitinery' James Herriot.

Read all of the first books as they came out. They were so well written and very funny. Then a friend of mine told me that they had never read them, so purchased the whole set of books as a surprise. I also began to read them again ~ still wonderful. There was a couple of things that I was very disappointed with was that several of the original episodes were missing from them (Twicky Woo was one), and the very poor printing and awful cartoons of this set. It looked as if someone had reprinted them and had overdone it with the printing ink.

Great books!

On reading these books 50 years later, I am sure that I laugh and am touched as much. The collection is second hand, but only the box was slightly torn. Reparied with a little sellotape and all is perfect.

As a grandma with 3 grandchildren (and more on the way!), I love the James Herriot books, some of which I read in my early teens, before the original tv series was aired. Being born and spending my early chlldhood in the Yorkshire dales in the 60s, these stories and the way they are told bring back memories and a sense of homesickness for bygone days, the beautiful and wild countryside, the down to earth hardworking farmers, my grandfather and father working on the farms or tending the gardens of the manors of such characters as Mrs Pumphrey, and the tales they told me as well as my own childhood experiences. This complete set is excellently produced, with stunning jacket illustrations by Robb McCaig, the print type used and the creamy white paper give the perfectly rounded nostalgischen touch. For those who still like the feel of a good book in their hands in this digital world, and appreciate a well thought out production, will not be disappointed. I usually prefer hardcover books, rather than paperback for longevity (especially books I like to reread), but am very pleased with this set which I bought for myself, and can highly recommend it as a quality gift at a very reasonable price to all booklovers, young and old.
