This is the brand new edition of Paul Harris' very popular Improve Your Sight-Reading! Piano series! The covers now contain US levels! Now more than ever, the ability to sight-read fluently is an essential part of the pianist's training, whether playing alone, as an accompanist or with ensemble. This workbook is designed to help overcome the nerves that can cause sight-reading problems. Step by step it helps the player to create a complete picture of each piece, first through rhythmic and melodic exercises related to specific problems, then by the study of prepared pieces with associated questions for the student to answer, then finally to the real, unprepared sight-reading test itself. Check-boxes for each stage allow both teacher and pupil to keep a record of progress. Review: Very helpful! - Just what we wanted. Thanks! Review: Fantastic method for improving your sight-reading - Excellent sight-reading method series. Firstly, this clearly says “Improve your sight-reading” in the title. Do not purchase this book if you don’t understand how to read music—for that you need a piano method book. This is for lack of a better term “speed reading”. You wouldn’t take a speed reading course if you first didn’t know how to read. Sight-reading basically means taking a piece of music, analyzing it for a minute or so and then just play it through beginning to end without stopping. The introduction and instructions at each stage are vitally important. Many other sight-reading series is lacking in that area. The exercises are primarily to test what level you are at. YOU WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR LEVEL WITH JUST THE EXERCISES IN THIS BOOK. NO SIGHT-READING BOOK CAN DO THAT. To advance to the next level you must read several pages a day of new music at your CURRENT level. You need access to lots of music; that is beyond the content of any sight-reading method book. There are online subscriptions for this purpose. Also, many good teachers will have a lending library. Hymnals are a good source for the lower grades as they have hundreds of songs.

Consistency is key!
I enjoyed this sight reading book. If you practice even for 15-20 minutes a day you will show significant progress

Useful but could use more guidance
I wish it was clearer how this book pairs with other books like Alfred's all in one. But so far its been useful

Gets the job done
An easy mostly painless progressive course to improve sight reading skills and rhythm. Not real exciting exercises, but they progress slow enough that you aren’t overwhelmed. Great for the person who finds they can play piano better then the can sight read. Even with piano lessons from a well above average teacher this book has helped. Similar to the Piano Sight Reading series and both are fine, but I personally prefer this series.

Believe it when it says it's level 1
I'm not sure what. was expecting when I ordered this book, but it was more than what I got. The contents are *very* simple. There is no simultaneous LH/RH material and the rhythms are about as basic as you can get. Unless you're a very small child, you will probably finish the whole thing in just a few hours at most, even as a beginner. Frankly, I feel ripped off.

A very practical book
It is very practical for beginner children and can help them master basic music theory and rhythm, but they must practice strictly according to the requirements.

A must have for a beginner
As a beginner, I bought this upon my piano teachers recommendation. And, I am glad I did. It may same very basic, but the exercises work as it helped me to improve my timing, counting and tempo.
