Transformers Special Edition Blast Off Action Figure

That was pretty bold of Hasbro to start off Combiner Wars with Blast Off, and then turn around and finish The Prime Wars Trilogy with a whole new Blast Off. They started off way back in 2016, giving us a Blast Off that was only Blast Off because of the color scheme Hasbro chose for a repaint of a jet from an earlier wave. Some people were not happy for the redesign from the original space shuttle. Flash forward to 2018, and we find that Amazon has an exclusive trio coming out that features three Transformers to represent the three chapters of the Prime Wars Trilogy. Enter the new Blast Off. This time sporting a new space shuttle vehicle mode. And boy does it look good. He is a Combiner, so he comes with the weapon that can become a hand or foot of any Combiner. This version of Blast Off's Combiner weapon has silver accents, as it is part of an exclusive set, but that makes it different than the rest of the additional feet and hands of Bruticus. Not too bad, but something to note if you switch out this Blast Off for the first version. He also comes with a special recolor of the Megatronus Prime Master in a transparent red. I do very much like the juxtaposition of having the #1 robot, Blast Off, a Decepticon, come with Megatronus that turned on Primus, while the #3 release of Punch, an Autobot, would come with Primus Prime, the first Transformer. Fun little background and really well thought out ideas by Hasbro. In all, this version looks more like the G1 version with a proper vehicle mode. There are also additional paint apps to really make his torso stand out. He is a great addition to the collection, and a good end to the Prime Wars Trilogy.

Superior to the Combiner Wars version of Blast Off, as much as I like the other one’s alt mode. This has given me a better Bruticus, and I can keep his older self separate for display. Cute shuttle alt mode, although I wish the arms locked at a rotated position in shuttle mode since the hollow parts are facing up. Very G1 cartoon accurate overall. Some people found you can somehow switch around his chest and shuttle cockpit backpack, to match the Japanese version. As far as I can tell this is a style preference, since in most incarnations of the character in comics and cartoons his shuttle parts just kind of vanish in robot mode, and in the original toy they were his arms. As a part of Bruticus he is far more stable than his old jet self, and can actually hold the Legends class Shockwave in gun mode without the arm bending down. The Megatronus Primemaster minifig is very nice, I love the transparent plastic, but now the rest of the non-transparent Prime Masters look disappointing in comparison. The box is very nice, good enough that I’m keeping it intact, and I believe that all three Amazon figures have their boxes come together to form one image for a neat little display. If you have Bruticus, get this. Even if you don’t, consider him as a great figure and a great Combiner limb.

So, like I'm sure many collectors in the know, I jumped on this when I heard that Hasbro would be releasing what appears to be Takara's Unite Warriors Blastoff, a new mold that becomes a space shuttle. However, in keeping with the Generation 1 TOY accurate coloring like they usually do, they used the reversed torso Unite Warriors Shuttler (aka Movor) version of the mold so that the area with the combiner post could be painted purple, much like the chest of the Slingshot/Quickslinger repaint that served as the original Combiner Wars (and thus IDW Blastoff) release. Nothing serious, just swap the arms around so the shuttle nose & canopy is the chest instead of the backpack. So...this bad boy also comes with a clear plastic version of the Prime Master Megatronus (Prime), aka The Fallen. Annoyingly but understandably, this version doesn't come with the Bomb-Burst Pretender Shell/Decoy Armor, so he's pretty useless here. Especially since Blastoff has his Unite Warriors hand/foot/gun combiner part instead of the Power of the Primes Prime Armor combiner hand. DESPITE the lack of value there, I still recommend this for Blastoff alone. But Hasbro knows they ain't right for such a huge price boost when Combiner Wars, Titans Return, & Power of the Primes Deluxe class figures ranged from USD $15-18. (Given that Prime Masters were six bucks, that's still not justified for ONLY the small figure...)

Blast Off is the Combaticons' aerospace combat specialist. He spends most of his time alone in the sky, striking at his targets. He comes off arrogant and aloof, but this masks how lonely he is above the battlefield. He will never reveal this though. He forms either and arm or leg of Bruticus. I honestly HATED the Combiner Wars Blast Off. It was Slingshot, or Quickslinger as he is now called, repainted to try and look like Blast Off's colors. They didn't even change the head to look like Blast Off! But this figure is perfect. It looks and feels like Blast Off. The gun's actually colored, and it looks nice. He is really easy to transform. I figured it out without the instructions. And honestly, my Bruticus feels complete now. Does it makes sense that a group of military themed vehicles has a space shuttle? Not really. But still this is a better version of the character than we got in Combiner Wars.

My version has a slight QC issue. A half finger print on the left wing, also some bubbles at the back.. I will take a star off due to that. The optional comment here is, I found it odd that the chest and the back doesn't really feel right. After searching around I found the original Takara mold (do some search on Blast Off and you will find a brown one which looks very identical) meant to have both arms switched (the entire arm, just pop it out from both shoulders and switch them). Also, the whole body during transformation rotated at the torso up, play around with it and you will know what I meant. Then everything looks amazing. The Megatronus Prime Master looks stunning with a matching transparent Red (and that's the key reason I bought this), also some small paint job issue, but this one not as severe as the wing I have. Overall, despite the QC issue on the wing, I love this figure. I will try to upload a pic once I got chance later.

He’s a bit flat in shuttle mode but does the job.

Pretty cool! Though shipped in a bubble padded envelope, Blastoff was received in a sealed, factory brown Hasbro box. Blastoff’s box, along with the figure were in mint shape. I really couldn’t be happier with the figure. Mine had no QC issues that I could see and when combined with Bruticus, he was the perfect link that we’ve been missing for this awesome combiner. I would definitely recommend picking up sooner than later!

This is probably one of the better Combiner Transformers I’ve ever seen. He looks great, feels great, and is fun to transform. The only issue is that his arms were put on wrong, but that’s easy to deal with than most other issue I had with other transformers. I love he packaging he comes in. It’s beautiful and embossed just like the larger Transformers packages. The fallen actually looks cool. I don’t like using him for the gimmick of this particular line though. Sometimes I have him take over Overlord’s body? Which makes him look scary but cool.

Pretty cool, like the look, works well in the combiner.
