Is there a speaker or can it only be heard through headphones?

There is no speaker on the item. You must connect headphones (which are included) or an external speaker to hear the drum.

How do I get a replacement book. My set didn’t come with a play by color book:(

I would recommend calling the customer service number on the original box or getting the email for service on the drum kits website! I’m sure they will send you a new booklet.

Thank you for purchasing! Please plug the pedals into the port on the back of the control panel labeled "foot pedal". Please also make sure that you've plugged them all of the way in. Lastly, you will need to make sure headphones, or a speaker are connect to the drum to hear all sounds.
