Does this port support splitting ethernet connection into two? The main concern is if the two splitted outputs are both connected. Thank you.

I think for what you wish, No. You sounds like you need a mini-hub I believe this might serve you better: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SF1005D-5-port-100Mbps-Desktop/dp/B000FNFSPY/    The MT-VIKI 2 is a mechanical routing switch for routing a single source signal, to either destination A OR B (not A and B). If your goal is sending a single source signal to two outputs at the *same* time, the answer is No. You would want a mini-ehternet hub. If there is an iMac connected to A, but nothing to B, you can use it to "turn off" the ethernet or internet connection to your iMac A, for instance, by selecting position B. If you have two destinations (each with their own respective cable), iMac A, and then iMac B, you can choose which is assigned to the internet, or not, at a given time. I have not tried it, but in reverse, if you have 2 *different* ethernet streams, A, and B, you might could reverse connect that to a single destination and choose the source as A or B then, going to that single destination. This is a mechanical routing switch. Works nice for setting single input source signal, to destination A or B, as designed. Hope this helps.

Can this be used to get an extra ethernet port on my modem which only has one port?

Accepted Answer

No.  This is an A-B switch, which allows you to share one Ethernet port with 2 devices by switching between them, but you can only use one at a time.  If you want to have two Ethernet ports available at the same time you need an Ethernet switch (something like the Netgear FS105).

I do not know if it would be the best option, but it certainly would function as a switch if you wanted to turn-off the internet to one of the input lines.  When you do this, it will turn the other input line on.

Question 4

2 questions: Does anyone know if all 8 lines are switched? That's needed for gigabit ethernet. Has anyone used this to switch rj11 telephone lines?

I confirmed, the box does switch all 4-pair (8 wires) independently.  Opening it up (easy to do) and it can be a bit confusing as it looks like there are only 6 terminals being switched.  In reality, each pushbutton is a 4PDT slide switch (actually 2 DPDT slide switches stacked end-to-end).  Thus each pushbutton switches 4 lines, and the mechanical arrangement has one switch up when the other is down.  Port A has 4 "up" contacts on one switch and 4 "down" contacts on the other, and Port B is just the opposite.  It's a rather ingenious arrangement, but it doesn't support true isolation. If both switches are thrown the same way (e.g. both out), then 4 pins from Port A and 4 pins from Port B are connected to the output.  Probably not dangerous in most cases, but definitely not desirable either.
